  2. Beginning Of The Mongols The Mongols were nomadic people that attacked the Chinese. They lived in tribes in the plains of North China. In 1206 a strong leader named Temujin united them together. He was then given a new name that was “Universal Ruler or Genghis Khan“

  3. Mongol Conquest • Khan organized the Mongols into a powerful army. • They killed men, women, and children in cities and villages. • Within 20 years he ruled a large part of Asia. • He later died in 1227. • The conquest continued even though he died..

Continued • Khan’s sons and grandsons continued to raid all over Asia and Eastern Europe. “There used to be the city of Riazan in the land of Riazan, but its wealth and glory ceased, and there is nothing to be seen in the city excepting smoke, ashes, and barren Earth.” - Serge Zenkovsky • In 1260 Khan’s grandson, Kublai Khan, became ruler • He completed the conquest and declared himself emperor in 1279.

Life In Yuan China • This began the Yuan dynasty. • Kublai Khan and the Mongol rulers had different ethnic groups. • Chinese resented being ruled • Kublai did not forced them to accept he Mongol way of life • Mongols placed heavy taxes on the Chinese • Taxes went to public work projects • Taxes improved their way of life

  6. Continued • The Yuan emperor built a new capital, Dadu, near Beijing. • Soldiers were sent over to keep the peace • Sea trade continued between India and Southwest Asia.

  7. Marco Polo • Most of what we know about this empire is from Marco Polo. • Between 1271 and 1295 he traveled through China • Marco is highly respected by the Mongols and served in Kublai’s court. • He wrote of his travels and his books sparked interest in China.

  8. End of Yuan Dynasty The Mongols were not content with their land and sailed to Japan in 1274 and 1281. However, violent storms and fierce defenders destroyed their force. This weakened the Mongolian military. In the 1300s Chinese groups rebelled against the Yuan Dynasty. A monk named Zhu Yuanzhang took charge and led his army into a final victory against the Mongols. China was once again ruled by the Chinese.

Fun Facts • Some military tactics were called Rope-A-Dope, the Suicide Squeeze, and the Give and Go. • Experts believe an average Mongol soldier could wipe out 100 US soldiers with a stick and pebbles. • Mail was delivered faster than modern day broadband networks. • Invented spaghetti, the concept of zero, the blues, etc.
