  2. What Are Life Skills? • Life skills are tools to building a health life. • “Just like you need skills to build a house, you need skills to build a happy, healthy life. Building a house is not an easy task. A lot of hard work is required, and you need the right tools, such as a hammer, nails, and wood” (Holt, pg. 26).

  3. Why Are Life Skills Important? • Cultivating life skills can help you improve the five dimensions of health in your life. • Learning to use life skills just takes practice.

  4. 10 Essential Life Skills • 1 – Assessing your health: • How healthy are you? • How do you know if you are doing the right thing for your health? • Assessing your health helps you evaluate your health and how your actions and behaviors affect your health

  5. 10 Essential Life Skills • 2 – Communicating Effectively • Good communication will help you listen and speak effectively. • In doing so, you will improve your relationships with your family, friends, classmates, teachers, and other adults.

  6. 10 Essential Life Skills • 3 – Practicing Wellness • Practice healthy behaviors daily so you can have good life-long health. These behaviors include getting enough sleep, eating right, etc. • 4 – Coping • The ability to deal with problems and difficult times (i.e. anger, depression, and loss of a loved one) effectively.

  7. 10 Essential Life Skills • 5 – Being a wise consumer • A consumer is someone who buys products or services • This will help you make good decisions about buying health products and services. • Ask yourself: Is this appropriate for my health?

  8. 10 Essential Life Skills • 6 – Evaluating Media Messages • Media (TV, radio, newspaper, movies, internet, and advertisements) all have a significant influence on your health. Practicing this life skill will help you analyze media messages so you can make wise decisions about your health.

  9. 10 Essential Life Skills • 7 – Using Community Resources • A resource is something you can use to achieve a goal. • Great resources for your health could be health clinics, libraries, and governmental agencies. • 8 – Making Great Decisions • Practicing this skill will help you make wiser and better choices for yourself

  10. 10 Essential Life Skills • 9 – Using Refusal Skills • Practicing this skill will provide you with different ways to say “no” to something you don’t want to do.

  11. 10 Essential Life Skills • 10 – Setting Goals • Practicing this skill will help you reach your goals and dreams. It is essential for success.
