  1. THE 5TH BEATITUDE THE MERCIFUL BLESSED ARE THE MECIFUL; FOR THEY WILL BE SHOWN MERCY

  2. STORY So often, we allow the memory to past sins to weigh us down. We are like the old woman climbing a steep hill carrying two heavy buckets of water. A farmer driving a wagon stopped to ask if she wanted a lift. Gratefully, she climbed into the cart still carrying the buckets of water. After a while, the farmer suggested she put the buckets down, but the woman

  3. Refused. “No,” she said, “I would prefer to take some weight off the poor horse by carrying them myself!” Jesus took the weight of our sins upon himself on Calvary. It would be the worst form of Ingratitude to allow past sins to come between ourselves and God. God forgives us. And, in the same measure, we are to show mercy to others.

  4. Bible Passages about the 5th Beatitude • Matthew 6:14-15-The all merciful Father and God of all comfort • 2Corinthians 1:3-4-The all merciful Father and God of all comfort • Matthew25:31-46-The Last Judgment • Matthew-The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant

  5. "Happy are the merciful, for they will have mercy shown to them." See Matthew 25:35; Romans 12:14-21; Luke 15:4-7 • We can be terribly righteous and cruel to others sometimes and be convinced that God wants this. However, this beatitude means much more than an emotional wave of pity for someone in trouble. The Greek word used for "Mercy" means the ability to get right inside the other person's skin until we can see things with their eyes, think things with their mind, and feel things with their feelings.

  6. This demands a deliberate effort of the mind and will. This would make forgiveness and tolerance so much easier. [From: http://jeshrall.tripod.com/2-8-The_Beatitudes.htm • To be merciful is to imitate God’s own virtue of mercy. It means to forgive those who have hurt oneself. The merciful are those who are moved by sympathy and love by God, our common Father to help others who are in need.

  7. This refers to the needy of all kinds; the unprivileged, the backward, the handicapped and the weak among our people. The merciful generously give whatever they can-money, service, clothing, - in order to relive the sufferings of others. • God will judge us on the way we share His mercy with others: ”If you forgive others their failings, your heavenly Father will not forgive your failings either [Matthew6:14-15]

  8. Our forgiveness must go so far as to win back those who have strayed: as Christ, the Good Shepard, seeks out the lost sheep, joyfully takes it o his shoulders, and invites all to rejoice. • To show mercy neither justifies falsehood and sin, nor tolerates foolishness, nor ignores specific injustice. To show mercy means to have compassion upon people who have gone astray as captives of sin.

  9. It means to forgive those who are so unrighteous that they hurt themselves as well as others. All people are sinners before God and each other, and they deserve every blame. But the Lord, according to His infinite mercy, forgives and has mercy on repentant sinners, just as the Parable of the Prodigal Son teaches us.

  10. Merciful people are ….. • Forgiving but not justify falsehood and sin • Humble, yet aware that they are also in need of mercy and forgiveness • Capable of putting themselves in the place of the other, thus they feel deeply in their hearts the pain and suffering of those around them. • Willing and always ready to do acts for charity to anybody. [From Loose Sheet]

  11. “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” Mercy is the loving disposition towards those who suffer distress. Love, compassion and forgiveness towards one’s neighbor will bring peace in your relationships. We say in the Lord’s Prayer: Forgive our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. As we are merciful to others, so our Heavenly Father will be merciful with us! Jesus reminds us that whatever “you did to the least of my brothers you did it to me [Matthew 25:31-46].” St. Paul calls for the obedience of faith in the beginning and end of his Letter to the Romans [1:5, 16:25-27]. 12. The wing and the hand of the angel with the cross symbolize the act of mercy and represent those giving mercy as shown with the bandage hand. The caduceus represents the medical profession. While the Chi Rho represents Christ and the bottommost symbol represents sickness and healing. [From Grant’s report]
