  2. Recuerda…Para usar el pretérito… • We use the preterit to talk about events that were completed in the past. • There is a definite start and ending of the action • The narration of events • Q: What did you eat today? • A: I ate a banana.

  3. Regular –ar verb endings Hablar = To talk

  4. Regular –er/-ir endings • ¡Buena noticia! –er/-ir verbs share preterit endings!

  5. ¡Ojo! • -ar and –er verbs that stem change in the present tense do NOT have a stem change in the preterit. • However, -ir verbs stem change in the preterit. • -ir verbs only change in the s.p.o.t. and p.p.o.t

  6. Práctica… • Esta mañana, yo ________ (comer) yogur y _________ (beber) café. • Ayer, mis padres me _________ (escribir) un correo electrónico. • Anoche mis amigos y yo _______ (salir) para la fiesta a las ocho y media. • ¿ _________ (aprender) tú las formas del pretérito?

  7. Respuestas… • Esta mañana, yo comí yogur y bebí café. • Ayer, mis padres me escribieron un correo electrónico. • Anoche mis amigos y yo salimos para la fiesta a las ocho y media. • ¿ Aprendiste tú las formas del pretérito?

  8. Una cosa más… • Verbs with a stem that end in a VOWEL, have a spelling change. • Change the í to a y • This only occurs in the S.P.O.T. and P.P.O.T. forms. • Strange things happen in the basement!

  9. Práctica… • Mi mamá ______________ (leer) un libro bueno. • ¿_____________ (oír) Uds. las noticias? • Alicia y Roberto ____________ (creer) que la tortilla española es sabrosa.

  10. Mi mamá leyó un libro bueno. • ¿Oyeron Uds. las noticias? • Alicia y Roberto creyeron que la tortilla española es sabrosa.
