  2. Description After an introduction to the topic of ecology, the students will participate in a scavenger hunt where they will collect specimens in nature. They will sort and classify the specimens into living and nonliving, and based on these classifications they will create a dichotomous key.

  3. Objectives • TSWBAT… • Distinguish between living and nonliving organisms by considering traits that define life. • Organize and categorize collected specimens based on observable traits. • Develop and use a dichotomous key from the collected specimens.

  4. Materials and Preparation • Dissecting microscope or magnifying lenses • Forceps • Collection jar, plastic bags, bucket • Trowel • Cameras for pictures of specimens that cannot be collected
