Ceramic Nanosensor Diagnostics PelagiaGouma, SUNY at Stony Brook, DMR 1106168 Outcome: The research group of Dr. Gouma at Stony Brook, NY has used successfully various polymorphs of the same metal oxide achieving differential gas specificity. Therefore, while the monoclinic phase of tungsten trioxide (g­WO3) shows selectivity to nitric oxide, its less known ferroelectric e-phase makes for a selective acetone gas sensor. Impact: The use of the tailored metal oxide nanosensors in breath analysis may revolutionize medical diagnostics, since a single sensor may detect a particular metabolite in the complex gas mixture that the exhaled breath is. Thus, a nitric oxide specific sensor may be used to warn about and prevent asthma attacks, while a selective acetone sensor may provide for non-invasive monitoring of insulin levels to suffering individuals. Explanation:This recent award focuses on understanding the mechanisms controlling selective gas-oxide interactions. A crystallo-chemical approach to gas selectivity of particular oxide crystals is explored in this project.
