  2. Being Active • You don’t have to be involved in sports to be active. • Everyone needs physical activity to be healthy and strong. • Physical activity helps you have more energy, be more alert, and learn better.

  3. Types of Physical Activity Vigorous Activity • Also called cardiovascular activities. This means that these types of exercises make your heart beat faster. • When you body sweats from doing these types of activities, it acts as an “air conditioner” to bring your body’s temperature down.

  4. Try This!!! • Place you hand over your heart. Can you feel it beating? It should be beating pretty normal. • Now I want everyone to do 10 jumping jacks. • Now feel your heart again. Is it beating faster now? • Your heart is helping to pump blood and oxygen throughout your body.

  5. Types of Physical Activity Stretching • This activity involves bending, stretching, and reaching. • These activities do not make our hearts beat faster, but they help us to stretch our bodies and become more flexible.

  6. Types of Physical Activity Strength Activity • These activities help build strong bones and muscles. • They also help you maintain your posture. • Some of these activities involve pushing, pulling, push-ups, and climbing.

  7. Try This!!! I will name several activities. If you think they are “vigorous” activities give me a thumbs up and if they are not give me a thumbs down. • Running • Dancing • Watching TV • Jumping • Swimming • Hopping • Playing video games • Walking fast

  10. Voluntary Muscles • Voluntary muscles are the ones that move when you want them to. • You have to think in order to move these muscles. • These types of muscles are those in your arms and legs that make you swing your arms and walk.

  11. Voluntary Muscles Can you name some other things that you think are use voluntary muscles? • Waving • Walking • Turning our head • Jumping • Running • Sitting

  12. Involuntary Muscles • Involuntary muscles are the ones that move all the time. • You do not have to think in order to move these muscles. They move on their own. • These types of muscles are those that make your heart beat, your lungs breathe, and your eyes blink.
