It is also known as the source of Japan’s best tea, and matcha has been cultivated here since the 1100s. In fact, this is where Japan’s first tea plantation was sown, in the precincts of the mountain temple Kōzan-ji. The nearby forest and morning dew from the river contributed to creating the perfect environment for tea production, and the Zen monks began drinking it regularly for its vitalizing qualities.
