  3. What is a Modern Data Warehouse? Your organizations' data is invaluable because it provides a wealth of information that your organization can use to make better decisions faster. The challenge is that the average enterprise has over 115 different apps and data sources, according to a new report from snapLogic. Even more disconcerting is that 49% of these organizations do not have a way to connect these data sources. That is why modern data warehouses (MDW) offer so much promise. It centralizes data to analyze this data in clear and understandable manners. Cloud Computing Before we go into modern data warehouses, we must first understand cloud computing. Cloud computing provides access to online database resources. Cloud computing's appearance changed the way we save data over the past few years. Instead of saving files to our desktop, computer, or internal server, 82% of organizations now use a cloud computing solution. Cloud Computing Page No. 1 Page 2 Modern Data Warehouse | BeyondKey.Com

  4. What is a Modern Data Warehouse? The reason is an explosion in data over the past four years. Humans created 70% of all the world's data ever created in 4 years. Consider the data from music, video, files, photos, applications, and wearables. Think about remote IoT devices that offer information to organizations or applications generating more data. All these applications and devices provide data and metrics. Again, today's challenge is organizations do not have the capacity to store extra data on their servers. EDW versus MDW The best way to understand this is by looking at the history of data warehousing. The traditional data warehouse, or enterprise data warehouse (EDW), is an on-premises solution. Often, an on-premise solution is adequate in conventional office spaces where you only need two or three servers. If you ever worked in an office any time before 2010, almost every enterprise had a server room or server closet, depending upon the organization. However, EDW solutions take up a lot of space and require money to buy those servers and pay salaries for database administrators. As organizations grow, they need an entire database team with database administrative managers and other roles. It's a lot of resources, a lot of money. However, the benefit here is you keep all your data in-house. Because of the explosion we had in data over the last few years, many organizations started looking at cloud-based solutions because EDW solutions could not keep up with their demand. It was around this time that the cloud market started providing mature solutions. Page No. 1 Page 3 Modern Data Warehouse | BeyondKey.Com

  5. What is a Modern Data Warehouse? Modern data warehouses are a perfect example. Keep in mind the difference between cloud and MDW is that the latter is not just about storing the information. MDW's help you understand your data. For organizations with massive amounts of data, a modern data warehouse creates a visual understanding of that data. Many solutions use live streaming dashboards. 6. Modern Data Warehouse Features Is your data safe? Furthermore, because data went from an on-premises solution to a cloud-based solution in a modern data warehouse, companies need to make sure their data was safe. Cloud providers often include multiple security layers and disaster recovery as a critical component of their services. That is why in some cases, it is safer to use a modern data warehouse than a data warehouse solution. For example, if you have two servers in your office that store all your data, what happens if God forbid there's a fire, someone steals some data, or you lose it over time because stuff breaks down. That information is then gone forever. A modern data warehouse, a company like Microsoft, which provides an Azure Cloud, has multiple server storehouses worldwide. They are not just backing up your data; they back up the backups. If something goes wrong in one server, they could use the backup of the backup of the backup and find out what they need. Furthermore, there are multiple security layers because they need to comply with HIPAA, GDPR, CCA, and other rules. Modern data warehouse helps ensure your system is secure and in compliance with these regulations. Mobile MDWs' are a cloud-based, mobile solution. Usually, in a traditional enterprise data warehouse, you can only access your modern data warehouse from your computer at work since it's on-premise. As we have seen over the past year, it's beneficial to have mobile access to your data. Therefore, anyone connected to your warehouse solution Page No. 1 Page 5 Modern Data Warehouse | BeyondKey.Com

  7. Modern Data Warehouse Features can access the dashboards' files and visualizations from their mobile devices. IntelligentDecisions Modern data warehouses are cloud-based solutions that gather and store information. Furthermore, they also process that data to help you make intelligent decisions. We cannot stress this enough; it is not just about gathering and storing data. Modern data warehouses process that information to make better and smarter decisions. Many organizations use a modern data warehouse to improve their business processes and make smarter decisions for their finance, human resources, sales, and operations departments. 8. 5 Modern Data Warehouse Steps There are five steps for a modern data warehouse, as you can see from the pyramid below. Data Acquisition Data acquisition uses IoT devices, social media content, applications, spreadsheets, and other methods. Think about all the YouTube videos, the tweets, posts, past customer data your company has. It would help if you had a way to acquire this data. Data Engineering MDW is not just about data acquisition; you need to upload it into a data warehouse. Data engineering uses pipelines to help with the ETL (extract, transform, load) process. 5 Modern Data Warehouse Steps Page No. 1 Page 7 Modern Data Warehouse | BeyondKey.Com

  9. 5 Modern Data Warehouse Steps You can use an enterprise data warehousing solution that leverages data lakes and service businesses. And using these different tools, you could start uploading that information to a data warehouse. Take the manufacturing idea of a factory. The data arrives as raw materials coming into the factory. Data engineering is the truck delivering data to the factory. Master Data Management and Governance In a factory, the employee checking the materials is similar to the master data management and governance process. In this step, they need to store the data to take care of security and privacy. The governance process stewards, cleans, and evaluates the quality of the data. Azure has tools to help prep this data. Factory Analysis You need to start analyzing the raw material (data) and turn it into a finished good. Factory analysis uses reporting and business intelligence tools. We use Microsoft Power BI to analyze and visualize the data using advanced analytics, KPIs, and workflow automation to see what's going on with your data. Artificial Intelligence Modern Data warehousing is not just about seeing the information; it's about using it to make smarter decisions. That is a critical concept that we want you to walk away with today. Modern data warehouses use many things with data science, using AI, deep learning, machine learning, statistical modeling, and natural language processing (NLP). Artificial intelligence (AI) runs on data. The more data you provide, the smarter your decisions, the better your results. AI can help examine your financial, sales, and employee reports to ensure you have the right information to make those smart business decisions. 10. Modern Data Warehouse Benefits Cost-effective MDW uses scalable storage based on demand. We talked earlier about how a traditional enterprise data warehouse uses a storage server. You pay for the server and the database administrators. For example, maybe you need to store 100 gigabytes of data. With an enterprise data warehouse, you buy a one terabyte server and pay for the entire server. You don't pay for 10% of the server. You pay for everything, including the space you don't use. Furthermore, you also pay the database administrator to manage the 10% of the server you use. However, a modern data warehouse is a cloud solution. That means you pay for what you need because it is scalable based on your demands. Organize and share data Modern data warehouses allow to slice and dice the information. It is more than a storage system; it helps you evaluate essential data for your organization. You can use the data to support various departments work with the prospect to the best of your ability. Think about the life journey of a prospect who becomes a customer and then a raving fan. They start by signing a lead gen form. Next, marketing uses that information to learn about the prospect and send vital stats to the sales team. The sales team then works with the prospect to turn them into a customer. Customer service uses the data from sales to help the customer even more. It is a big cycle of data that feeds on itself to be more helpful over time Page No. 1 Page 9 Modern Data Warehouse | BeyondKey.Com

  11. Modern Data Warehouse Benefits Faster decisions The final benefit is that you can make faster decisions based on facts. The modern data warehouse does not only provide more data, but it does faster than you could previously. To stay competitive today, you need to make faster decisions based on facts. That is where modern data warehouse helps. For example, we migrated a medical device company in the US over to a modern data warehouse to filter data they collected from disparate sources. The executive team needed this information to track sales, claims, billing, collections, and inventory. Combining Microsoft Azure's data warehouse solutions with Power BI helped them create visual reports 75% faster than their previous solution. Page No. 1 Page 10 Modern Data Warehouse | BeyondKey.Com

  12. Modern Data Warehouse Architecture To understand how to use a modern data warehouse, we will explore how to use Microsoft Azure for your architecture. Microsoft Azure has 6,000 different modules and tools you can use. To help, we will share six main modules that will highlight the architecture. Azure Data Factory: Ingests information for the ETL process Azure SQL Data: Manage, computes, and stores data Azure Data Lake: Scalable, relational database management Azure Databricks: Data governance and management (prep, clean, and train the data) Azure Synapse: Analyzes data In addition to all the Azure modules, Microsoft's modern data warehouse can incorporate Power BI to visualize your data. We have discussed Power BI a little already in this eBook, and it is worth giving you an example of how a client of ours used this technology to help their organization. Note: Power BI is not part of the Azure Modern Data Warehouse, but the tool plays a critical role in visualizing the data in Azure. The example we have is from a healthcare facility client. With 20 different health centers across the US, the decision-makers needed to sort and analyze large amounts of raw patient data and clinical data. Page No. 1 Page 11 Modern Data Warehouse | BeyondKey.Com

  13. Modern Data Warehouse Architecture Beyond Key developed a system to analyze these large amounts of data from every healthcare center on visual dashboards that executives, clinicians, and patients could use in one place. It is an excellent example of working smarter because they used the data to schedule patients more effectively by scheduling more patients into open booking slots. The doctors could help more patients in less time. To give you an idea of how Azure and Power BI work together, below is an example of the modern data warehouse architecture. Modern Data Warehouse Architecture The architecture starts with two options. The first are logs, files, and unstructured media, while the second option is custom business apps. Before moving forward, the importance here is the mind-boggling amount of data created today. Keep in mind that 70% of all data was made in the last four years; think about all the logs, files, photos, videos, podcasts, audio files, and business/custom apps. 14. Final Thoughts For our purposes, we will review a simple architecture. In this case, you have a transcription log from a customer call. You're uploading/ingesting this transcription log into the Azure Data Factory. From here, Azure Data Lake Storage will store the transcription log. If you want to prep and train the log to understand the call data, you can use Azure Databricks. It preps and trains the data and turns it over to the Azure Synapse Analytics and Azure Analysis Services to model, analyze, and organize your information. Finally, you forward this data to Power BI to visualize the data. Furthermore, because you have all this information right in front of you, they're able to reduce patient query resolution time because they knew exactly how to answer those questions instead of having to search around and look for them. Finally, they're able to raise the patient privacy and security standards on things that we've talked about earlier with the different types of tools and information they had available to ensure they comply with HIPAA and other relevant government laws. Final Thoughts A modern data warehouse is growing in popularity with businesses because of the growth of data in the world. Companies no longer want to merely capture the data; they want to understand what it means as fast as possible. Organizations that do not spend time reviewing this data will do so at their peril.
