  8. Article VI • National debts, supremacy of National (Federal) Law, and oaths of office • When in question, federal law outweighs state law

  12. Limited Government • No government is all powerful • PEOPLE are only source of government authority • Government must obey their own laws given to them • Not above law • Government cannot fully control people

  13. Separation of Powers • Whole idea of three branches of government • Each has their own duties • Montesquieu idea

  14. Checks and Balances • NO branch has more power than another • Each has duties, but can be checked by other branches • How bill becomes law

  15. Judicial Review • Power given to the courts to make sure government actions and laws are constitutional • Marbury vs. Madison case established this

  16. Federalism • Balancing and division of power between the federal AND state governments • This is what made the Constitution different than the Articles of Confederation
