  1. Themes God’s rescue of Elimelech’s family from extinction and on to the David and the line of Christ. God’s gracious love is shown through the extravagant kindness of His people. This book highlights how God’s people experience his sovereignty, wisdom, and covenant kindness. These often come disguised in hard circumstances and are mediated through the kindness of others.

  2. The Entire Book Let’s end our study as we began…

  3. Ruth 4:13-22 13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And he went in to her, and the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son. 14 Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without a redeemer, and may his name be renowned in Israel! 15 He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is more to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.” 16 Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her lap and became his nurse. 17 And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.

  4. Ruth 4:13-22 18 Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez fathered Hezron, 19 Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab, 20 Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, 21 Salmon fathered Boaz, Boaz fathered Obed, 22 Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.

  5. “Blessed be the Lord” – The women see the kindness of His people and give the glory to God. “not left you this day” – What a contrast to the Naomi of chapter 1, vss. 20-21. “his name” – referring to Obed here.

  6. Ruth 4:13-22 15 He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is more to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.”Seven is a number of perfection. Ruth exceeded a perfection! 16 Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her lap and became his nurse. MacArthur says, “This expresses the natural affection of a godly grandmother for her God-given grandson.” Was Obed now Naomi’s son?

  7. Ruth 4:13-22 17 And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David. This is the only place in the OT where this naming practice exists.

  8. Ruth 4:13-22 18 Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez fathered Hezron, 19 Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab, 20 Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, 21 Salmon fathered Boaz, Boaz fathered Obed, 22 Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David. Perez to Nashon is from patriarchs to the Exodus and wilderness wanderings…likely all were fathers to sons.Salmon to David covers Joshua’s lifetime, the judges to the Israel monarchy…likely not all were fathers to sons. 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, 4 and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, (Matthew 1:2-6 ESV)

  9. Ruth 4:13-22 18 Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez fathered Hezron, 19 Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab, 20 Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, 21 Salmon fathered Boaz, Boaz fathered Obed, 22 Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David. “This genealogical compression by omission does not signal faulty records, because in Jewish thinking ‘son’ could mean ‘descendant’. The purpose of a family record did not necessarily include every generation, but rather established incontestable succession by way of the more notable ancestors.”The MacArthur Bible Commentary (Kindle Locations 11065-11085). Thomas Nelson. Kindle Edition. Luke 3:33 the son of Amminadab, the son of Admin, the son of Arni, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, 4 and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, (Matthew 1:2-6 ESV)

  10. Ruth 4:13-22 18 Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez fathered Hezron, 19 Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab, 20 Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, 21 Salmon fathered Boaz, Boaz fathered Obed, 22 Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David. Boaz was named seventh. This was a place of honor in a geneaology.

  11. The Book of Ruth What questions arise as we read? Why did Naomi want her daughters-in-law to go back to their false gods? Why is Boaz mentioned in the genealogy instead of Naomi’s husband or son? Why is gleaning such a dangerous activity? Why does the first redeemer decide not to redeem? What is the cultural significance of Ruth laying at his feet? Why did Ruth stand out as being a foreigner? Can we assume that Boaz is single? If Boaz had other wives and children, what affect would redeeming Ruth have? Why did Ruth have to spend the night at his feet? Why did Naomi take care of baby Obed? Why did the women of the city name the baby? Why did the purchase of the land and marrying Ruth go together? Did Boaz “buy” Ruth? Who did he buy land from? Was Boaz being manipulative when he asked the first in line? What is the significance of Ruth uncovering his feet? Something important about feet in that day? How was it a good thing that Ruth wanted Boaz to redeem her? What is the significance of using a sandal to verify a transaction?Helps include Ruth commentaries and sermons by Bennett, Hubbard, MacArthur, etc.
