Use of The Cochrane Library • Usage estimates for 2009: • a search of CLIBevery 1 second • an abstract viewed every 2 seconds • a full text review downloaded every 3 seconds (across all web platforms, including Wiley InterScience, cochrane.org, La Bibliotheca Cochrane Plus, Bireme, OVID and EBSCO)

  8. Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) 4,621 full reviews – of the effects of interventions/DTA/overviews 2,020 protocols – reviews in preparation (CLIB – 15 May 2011)

  9. What is special about CDSR? • up-to-date systematic reviews of existing evidence • higher quality than other systematic reviews (but …) • reviews updated with new studies / improved methods • amended / updated from comments and criticisms • pre- and post-publication

  10. What is new about CDSR? • From January 2010 CDSR is updated monthly online (not quarterly) (The DVD continues to be published quarterly) • Other databases continue to be updated quarterly except About The Cochrane Collaboration / “Cochrane Groups” (monthly)

What is new about CDSR? • The Cochrane Collaboration’s Evidence Aid project: • established Dec 2004 (Indian Ocean tsunami) • provides reliable, up-to-date evidence from Cochrane Reviews and other systematic reviews • interventions for natural disasters / major healthcare emergencies • which interventions work / don’t work / need more research / might be harmful • provides information to agencies planning for / responding to disasters

What is new about CDSR? • Evidence Aid (cont): • Wiley-Blackwell / The Cochrane Collaboration / Evidence Aid opened free, one-click access to the whole contents of The Cochrane Library to everyone in Japan on the day of the earthquake / tsunami (11 March 2011) • Information translated into Japanese

  16. What is new about CDSR? • Impact factor for CDSR for 2009 = 5.653 • ranked 11th in the ‘Medicine, General & Internal’ category out of the 132 journals included in the ISI Medicine, General and Internal journal list (previously 12th)

CENTRAL – clinical trials register in CLIB • c. 650,000 reports of RCTs and other controlled trials • 350,000 from MEDLINE (all records indexed as RCT or CCT in PT in humans) • 100,000 additional reports of trials from searching EMBASE • 200,000 reports of trials from handsearching journals / conference abstracts (CLIB – 15 May 2011)

  18. What is special about CENTRAL? • unique! • best single source of reports of randomized controlled trials • ‘trials on a plate’

  19. What is new about CENTRAL? • In October 2009 Metaxis awarded contract to build a new Cochrane Register of Studies (CRS) – to feed into CENTRAL Due for release internally late 2011 CRS will be study-based and reference-based – as will CENTRAL

How to access The Cochrane Library ? • www.thecochranelibrary.com • FREE access to CDSR titles, abstracts and plain language summaries • pay-to-view option for full record for non-subscribers • free access to CENTRAL (titles only) • free access to the titles of records from other database FULL access to all records for subscribers through: Wiley-Blackwell, EBSCO and Ovid

How to access The Cochrane Library ? • Types of subscription national provisions (population-wide) many countries – but not (yet) the US! regional provisions (population-wide) e.g. some Canadian provinces and Wyoming professional provisions e.g. through professional associations Evidence Aid / HINARI / INASP

What else is new in The Cochrane Collaboration? • Jan 2011 - accepted as a ‘Non-Governmental Organization in Official Relations with the WHO’ • establishes a partnership with formalized communication between our two organisations • awarded a seat at the World Health Assembly, allowing us to provide input on WHO health resolutions.
