  2. Objectives • To increase awareness of some of the resources currently available on NLH • For users • For library staff • To have an opportunity to explore some of these resources and be clearer about when to use them • Get some feedback from you!

  4. Dictionaries • Medical dictionary search • Black’s – general purpose medical dictionary, covering anatomy, treatments and conditions. • Medicines Guide – for medicines (drugs). • Quick and easy – not much detail. • Good for students and non-clinicians • No Athens account needed

  5. Clinical Knowledge Summaries • Browsable and searchable • Aimed at Primary Care practitioners – but useful for others. • Incorporates and has updated Prodigy • Evidence-based • Detailed, practical guidance • Patient information leaflets • NHS Direct patient FAQs • No Athens account needed • Tip: Use “View whole topic” if you find the menu headings unhelpful.

Cochrane Library • Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) • Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE), NHS Economic Evaluation Database (NEED), Health Technology Assessments (HTA) and Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) • Further info:www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/mrwhome/106568753/ProductDescriptions.html • Highly detailed • No Athens account needed

  7. DUETs • Database of Uncertainties of Effects of Treatments • www.duets.nhs.uk • Designed to identify gaps in the evidence base • Aimed at researchers and those prioritising research • No Athens account needed

Question Answering Service • Find frequently asked clinical questions. • Get your customers to send in questions when you can’t answer them! • Aimed at primary care, but useful to others. • No Athens account needed • Tip: The search box is in the top-right corner • Tip 2: the “Ask us a question” link is in small text at the bottom of the screen.

  9. Guidance hub • National Library of Guidelines • NICE • Care pathways collection • International guidelines • Search individually or together • No Athens account required

  10. Images hub • Currently searches across 7 collections • Note: Images MD will not be available via NLH after April • No Athens account neededto search – but Images MD will require Athens login to see full-size image.

Specialist Libraries • 30 Specialist Libraries currently available • New in 2008/09: Peripheral Vascular Disease; Public Health; and Commissioning • Evidence-based and quality-filtered • Made by librarians! (and clinicians) • Search one or more, or all at the same time • No Athens account needed to search • Some full-text results require Athens

  12. For Librarians • Not just for librarians • For paraprofessionals and non-library staff, e.g. IT • Tip: Not searchable, so familiarise yourself with the file structure • NLH calendar

  14. My Library • Personalised, customisable NLH page • Set a home library and additional libraries • My Update – RSS feeds • My Links – favourite websites • My Journals – favourite journals • Local, regional and national Athens resources • Athens account required

My Library tasks • Set your home library • Think about your favourite websites (don’t have to be work-related) add them to My Links. • Again, using your favourite sites, look for RSS feeds.Copy the addresses and add to My Update • Use the NLH RSS Directory to add more feeds • Add a journal to My Journals • Use the handout for further details on how to customise your My Library page
