  2. What are fossil fuels? • Fossil fuels are any naturally occurring carbon or hydrocarbon fuel, such as coal, petroleum, oil, peat, and natural gas, formed by the decomposition of prehistoric organisms. • They are remains from former life used now for powering the earth.

  3. Petroleum • One of the most talked about subjects in the past decade or so has been about petroleum. • From the chart you can see that the price is rising considerably because petrol is running out fast and is hard to get over to the UK.

  4. Oil • Oil is one of the world’s most versatile substances and can be refined into numerous different compounds, each capable of being manufactured into many others. • Without oil most of the household goods that we take for granted would not exist.

  5. Coal • Coal-fuelled power plants provide half of the electricity used in the United States. It can also be converted into a liquid as fuel for cars. • The amount of coal being used is going down because the supplies are running out at the north pole. • It is primarily used as a solid fuel to produce heat through combustion.

  6. How are fossil fuels formed? • Fossil fuels are formed over thousands and millions of years. • Fossil fuels are deep inside the Earth. • Fossil fuels are made of dead animals and plants.
