Background • 1 ½ million Americans left their homes to protect the freedom of people halfway around the world • Jan. 1950: Sec. of State Dean Acheson drew a line protecting Japan and the Philippines BUT not the Korean peninsula • North Korea invades in July 1950 • August 2nd: First Marines to land in Korea (Pusan) • September: U.S. takes back Inchon • October 9th: Last S. Korean City taken by the North had been reclaimed! • October 17th: U.S. advances to Pyongyang in North Korea

  3. RUMOR: Troops will be home by Christmas! • October: Red China threatened to go to war if the 38th Parallel was crossed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (MacArthur tells Truman: NO way! – WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) • November 27-28th: 300,000 Chinese go to war => Mao Zedong, like a crafty spider, spun a trap! • On the ground, U.S. troops were outnumbered 10 to 1. • “Hell on Earth” • Freezing cold – the coldest conditions the American soldier has EVER faced!
