Children’s Organ Transplant Association® Specific Patient Case Study About Rachel Smith Rachel Smith was born on January 18, 2005 and was “the picture of health;” but was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder. In Rachel’s case, she would most likely die in her teens after enduring serious side effects during a short life.

  5. Children’s Organ Transplant Association® Specific Patient Case Study Rachel’s best option was a cord blood transplant, and she had her transplant at Duke University Medical Center on November 21, 2007. The goal was for a full recovery by April 2008 and for Rachel to be home.

  6. Children’s Organ Transplant Association® Specific Patient Case Study Due to complications, Rachel’s family has remained in Durham. The original fund raising goal of $65,000 was met, but with their extended stay, COTA set a new goal of $175,000 with the hope that Rachel will be home by December 2009.
