Children’s Organ Transplant Association® Specific Patient Case Study About Rachel Smith Rachel Smith was born on January 18, 2005 and was “the picture of health;” but was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder. In Rachel’s case, she would most likely die in her teens after enduring serious side effects during a short life.

6. Children’s Organ Transplant Association® Specific Patient Case Study Rachel’s best option was a cord blood transplant, and she had her transplant at Duke University Medical Center on November 21, 2007. The goal was for a full recovery by April 2008 and for Rachel to be home.

7. Children’s Organ Transplant Association® Specific Patient Case Study Due to complications, Rachel’s family has remained in Durham. The original fund raising goal of $65,000 was met, but with their extended stay, COTA set a new goal of $175,000 with the hope that Rachel will be home by December 2009.

23. Children’s Organ Transplant Association The Ohio American Legion has challenged Ohio Legionnaires to each contribute 50 cents to COTA kids. When the year is complete, this will amount to more than $60,000 raised for Ohio patients. National partnerships like this help families even without large groups of volunteers.
