  2. COAL RESOURCES OF INDIA

  3. PREAMBLE MECL • Coal resources of India are available in lower Gondwana formation of peninsular India and tertiary of North-East Region • Major share of coal resources confined to Gondwana’s (313561 mt) while remaining (1588 mt) are available in tertiary formation (RESOURCES IN MILLION TONNES) (As Per Inventory Indian Coal by GSI 1/4/2017) (CONTD.)

  4. LOCATION OF MAJOR COAL FIELDS OF INDIA

  5. STATE-WISE RESOURCES OF INDIAN COAL MECL

  6. HIGHLIGHTS MECL • MECL is associated with coal exploration since its inception in 1972 • Completed coal exploration in 818 no.of blocks spread over 45 no. Of coalfields of India • 69.08 lakh mts. Of drilling and 42.11 thousand mts. of developmental mining were carried out Scheme Drilling Dev.Mining (Lakhs metres) (Metres) Promotional (since 1990) 7.14 -- Contractual (since 1972) 61.94 42112 • The exploration was carried out on promotional basis on behalf of MOC and on contractual basis on behalf of CIL and state Govt., other PSUs and Pvt. organisations (CONTD.)

  7. DRILLING IN COAL FOR LAST 10 YEARS BY MECL MECL

  8. HIGHLIGHTS MECL • Established 108232 million tonnes of coking and non- coking coal resources representing 34% of total coal resources of the country as per following : • Major Coal blocks in production : 57 • Coal production increased from 75 mt (1973) to more than 670 mt (2017-18). • Also completed remote sensing studies in 34 nos. of coal blocks (RESOURCES IN MILLION TONNES) (CONTD.)

  9. HIGHLIGHTS OF ACHIEVEMENT MECL • A number of new coal mines opened as well as existing ones extended resulting in enhancement of coal production from a level of 75 m.t. (During 1973) to over 670 m.t. • A number of new potential coal areas delineated in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. e.g. - Coal resources ofover28000 million tonnesestablished in Trans-Mand Raigarh coalfield in Syang-Basin-Batati area, Chhattisgarh - As a result of integrated approach around5358 million tonnesof coal resources have been delineated below trap in Hingna-Bazargaon area in Vidarbha Region - Around11221 million tonnesof coal resources assessed in Kanhiya block, Talchir Coalfield, Odisha • The deepest borehole of1400 metreswas drilled in Jharia coalfield in NQ size
