Context Inaccessible stairways leading to upper floor of Zewditu Hospital Where some access is ensured, people can’t afford to own assistive and adaptive devices Denial of access to public spaces led to denial of access to services and employment opportunities Spatial exclusion leads to socio-cultural alienation Only 7% of surveyed households in Uganda, 13% in Ethiopia, 13.5% in Senegal reported adapting their dwelling or accommodation to improve access

Progress and opportunities ….countries have ratified the UNCRPD Accessibility in Legal frameworks - constitutional provisions (e.g. Constitutions of Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Ghana) Disability-specific legislations (e.g.Malawi's Disability Act (Sec 8 (d) and (e) andUganda’s Persons with Disabilities Act (Sec 23 & 29) Building proclamations : E.g. Lesotho’s Building Control Act 1995 and Ethiopia’s Building Proclamation No. 624/2009 Strategic litigation: E.g. Making a case for investment in universal accessibility of services and facilities 4. Facilitating cross-country learning : b/n countries with progressive legislation and those without 5. Building capacity of DPOs and Persons with disabilities in self-advocacy 6. Greater involvement of persons with disabilities in architecture, town & urban planning and development 7. Better collaboration with the corporate and manufacturing sectors.
