  2. 1) Set up your page for Cornell Notes2) Write the chapter number as the title under your MLA heading. 3) For each chapter, look for 2 quotes that involve: symbolism foreshadowing character insight

  3. 4) In your cue column write the quote followed by the page number in parenthesis. Like this: “A throng of bearded men… the door of which was heavily timbered with oak, and studded with iron spikes” (14).

  4. 5) Then, in the note taking area next to your quote, interpret the passage and react to it.Like this: This passage paints a vivid picture of the pious Puritan culture. Notice the juxtaposition of nature and justice (the oak door, next to the iron spikes). 6) In the summary area, create two questions about the chapter.

  6. Are there any questions?Remember, you need to have at least two quotes per chapter in order to receive credit for the reading assignment.
