  3. Welcome to 4th Grade! • Welcome to our 4th grade classroom! • If you have any questions during my presentation, please feel free to raise your hand.

  4. All About Mrs. Diaz • My background • I was born and raised in Hialeah, Florida • I have nine years of teaching experience • (This is my tenth year teaching) • I have a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s degree in Reading.

All About Ms. Fernandez • My background • I was born and raised in Miami, Fl. • I have been teaching for 5 years and the last 4 have been in the fourth grade. • I have a Bachelor’s degree from Florida International University in Elementary Education and a Master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University in Educational Leadership.

My Goals • To give my students the academic and social skills they need to progress to 5th grade. • To provide my students with strategies to score well on the end of year assessment. • To provide your child with a safe and secure environment and to make new friends and discover new interests.

  9. Class Subjects • The subjects Mrs. Diaz teaches are: • Reading • Writing

  10. Reading • We will become familiar with all the Reading skills • Main Idea, Author’s Purpose, Compare and Contrast, Vocabulary, Cause and Effect, Fact and Opinion, Sequencing, Facts and Details, and Problem/ Solution • We will read fiction and nonfiction text • We will learn new vocabulary words to comprehend our stories better.

  11. Writing • Your child will learn to write: expository, opinion, narrative and historical narrative, essays.

  12. Ms. Fernandez Class Subjects • The subjects Ms. Fernandez’s teaches are: Math, Science, and Social Studies.

Math, Science, and Social Studies • We will demonstrate understanding of all benchmark skills required for fourth grade. • This year in math the students will cover multi-digit multiplication, long division, geometry, etc. • Mater Academy has implemented" Character Education”. Your child will learn about the Six Pillars of Good Character which are: Respect, Caring, Trustworthiness, Responsibility, Fairness, and Citizenship. We will also focus on current events utilizing Time For Kids Magazine. • Weekly labs will be conducted to facilitate students understanding of Science concepts. • We will be utilizing Instructional Technology 3 days per week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

  17. Classroom Community • Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other.

  18. Mrs. Diaz’s Rewards & Consequences • Rewards No Homework coupons/candy. Breakfast Club, ice-cream party, etc. for completing homework monthly. • Consequences Loss of privileges, note home, parent conference, referral

  20. Homework • I assign homework Monday-Friday. • Your child’s homework is due daily. If you miss 3 homework assignments, your child will sign the Homework binder, you will be notified and your child will serve a detention. • Reading Plus is a mandatory homework assignment that must be done every night and all tasks should be completed by Sunday. Students need 80% for the lesson to count. • At the end of the month if you complete ALL of your homework assignments you will receive breakfast or an ice cream party!

  21. Tardiness • School starts at 8:30 a.m. • If students aren’t in the classroom by the time the announcements begin, your child is considered tardy. • If you are tardy 10 times, you will receive a referral.

  22. Attendance • It is VERY important that your child come to school everyday. • If your child is absent, you need to bring a note from home or a doctor. • After 3 unexcused absences, you will receive a referral. • PLEASE try not be absent.

  23. Important Reminders • Home Learning is an essential part of your child’s education, skills taught in the classroom are reinforced through homework activities. Homework is to be completed daily. • All absences are marked unexcused until proper documentation is received. (i.e. parent or doctor’s note) After 3 unexcused absences, your child will receive a referral. • Ten tardies result in a referral. Leaving early ten times will also result in a referral • A total of 30 volunteer hours per family should to be completed. These may be fulfilled at the school or through wish list donations. Please provide a receipt with your purchase.

  24. Important Reminders • We are a mandatory uniform school. Students must wear uniforms to school each day. • Friday is Jeans Day, students may bring in $1 to wear their jeans and Mater Academy t-shirt. • Students’ grades may be viewed through the Parent Portal at www.dadeschools.net
