  3. Zulus • Powerful African tribe • One of the greatest African Empires • Fierce Warriors • Still 2 million in South Africa today

  4. Zulus • Conquered many lands of Africa • Zululand----area controlled by Shaka and the Zulus =most of South Africa today • 1823=100,000 sq. miles

  5. Shaka • Shaka = Zulu Leader, chief • Military genius • Gift for organization • Cruel and ruthless leader • Conquered all opposing African tribes

  6. Boers (Dutch) • From the Netherlands • Called themselves “Boers” =farmers in Dutch ---settled in S. Africa to start farms • Also known as Afrikaners

  8. Boers (Dutch) • 1652 ---came to Cape of Good Hope • 1st Europeans in South Africa • Used as a way station for ships sailing to Dutch East Indies

  10. British • Most powerful nation in the world • Come in and cause trouble • Take over the Cape Colony of the Boers (1806) • Clash with Boers over Policy regarding land, slaves, laws Boers move north away from British =Great Trek---1830 • Boers begin to clash with Zulus over land

Boers vs. Zulu • Boers visit Zulu King to ask permission to settle there • Boers invited to a feast----hours of dancing, eating, and drinking • Zulu warriors attack and kill all 70 Boers at feast once they tried to leave • Zulus raid Boer families and villages for next few days • Boers refuse to leave • 500 Boer soldiers fight 1000s of Zulu warriors----6 hours long • Boers defeat the Zulus and take their land • Eventually peace settles and both Boers and Zulus live together

  12. British vs. Zulus Zulu War • 1878-----British begin taking control of more land in South Africa • Demanded Zulu army disband • Zulus of course refuse (British knew they would)

  13. Zulu War • Zulu Wars----18,000 British officers w/ single-shot rifles vs. 25,000 Zulu warriors armed with spears(assegai) and shields

  14. Zulu War • Very close battle---Zulus nearly win • British eventually capture and burn the Zulu capital

Big Picture • Zulu war represents one of the worst effects of imperialism • Zulus tried to defend their land from foreign invaders • Europeans viewed and treated African people as inferior and of little importance or value • Also showed little respect for African cultures or customs • Africans were often treated as second class citizens in their own countries

British vs. Boers • 1899----Boer War • 1st European vs. European war on Africa • British continue to move North (into Boer territory) • Large Gold and Diamond rush in Boer territory----causing large immigration into Boer territory • Boers did not want non-Boers to have political rights • Rebellion against Boers---leads to war

  21. Boer War End Result • British eventually win and the Boer Republics join the Union of South Africa (controlled by British)

  22. Winston Churchill • War correspondent • Riding in a train w/ British soldiers and was ambushed by Boer soldiers • Churchill pulled some men to safety and when he returned was arrested by Boer soldiers • =became a National Hero when he escaped the South African prison and returned to Britain

  23. Apartheid • Complete separation of the races • Minority whites had all of the power---none for black majority
