  3. Introduction • Hillsborough County is the 3rd worst county for upward mobility in the United States. Source: New York Times • The #1 cause of death for black males 15-24 is homicide. Source: Center for Desease Control • Nationally, the graduation rate for black males is 59%. Hillsborough County Pinellas County, this drops below 50%. Source: Schott Foundation Report on Black Boys • Unarmed blacks are as likely to be shot by police as armed whites. Source: Dr. Cody Ross @ UCDavis 2015

Weaknesses: “reading, writing, math, limited faith, limited confidence, belief in self, effort, limited courage, believability, sports, achievement of goals, procrastination, motivation, lack of sleep, basketball, speaking out loud, lack of social skills, science, laziness, too outgoing, work/life balance, ignorance, perceptiveness, sensitivity, money, time, over-tolerant, indecisiveness, responsibility, procrastination, taking initiative”

  12. “A brotherhood is a close bond or friendship that involves loyalty, honesty, and forgiveness” • “Brotherhood is being a family, a unit knowing how to show respect, honesty and loyalty to one another, and being selfless and sharing love towards your brother or brotherhood.” • “Brotherhood is the bond you have between a group of men. It’s a group of your friends who use each other to climb through the social and economic hierarchy through intense unity.”

  15. “Academic excellence is having grades such as A’s and B’s. To have your grades good enough to those of an Indian is academic excellence. They will help you infiltrate the white man’s careers.” • “Academic excellence is when you can look back at your school year and say ‘I did a great job.’” • “It means that I worked hard and I passed my classes.” • “Working hard to succeed in your classes and doing your best to pass and get good grades.”

  16. “Being able to maintain my 4.0 GPA so I can walk across the stage with honors credit and be able to receive a football scholarship.” • “Academic Excellence for me is being able to put my schoolwork first and avoid procrastination in order to improve my GPA.” • “Making a 5.0 weighed GPA and maintaining straight A’s.” • “Having the determination and work ethic to achieve the best grade.”

  20. “Advocacy is suggesting an idea to other people to help others/another person.” • “Advocacy means to me is to lead the people around me.” • “Advocacy is the ability to put in workand work to aid others.” • “Advocacy is argumenting in favor of a special cause or need.” • “Advocacy is taking care of a special cause or speaking out on something in need – black lives matter.”

  22. How can we better fulfill the mission of our Fraternity through Men of Tomorrow? We are not just a professional society. We are not just a social study club. We are not just a service organization. We need a commitment from brothers toward MOT to fulfill our mission.

Workshops: 10-12p for academics. 12:30-2p programming July 23rd– Political Action August 27th– Voteless People September 10th– College Life September 24th– Parents Day October 8th– Service Careers October 29th– Brother to Brother December 3rd– STEM Careers December 17th–Brothers keeper January 7th–MLK Day of Service February 4th– Business Careers March 4th– Project Alpha April 1st– Brother to Brother 2 May 6th– Go to High School May 20th– Go to College We need brothers to lead. And help with 1 on 1 or groups!

Brother to Brother Joint Programs • Chapters have discussed 2 joint program meetings • First meeting to focus on social justice (in person) on 10/29 • Second meeting to focus on health issues (virtual) on 4/1 • Chapters involved from Orlando, Daytona Beach, and Tallahassee Table 1: Joint Program Budget for 30 to travel to Gainesville, FL

  27. Leader Development Citizenship Education Institute (LDCEI) In addition to scholarships awarded to graduating MOTs, younger MOTs that show promise should go to LDCEI (unknown location) Table 2: Budget for 2 MOT’s and 1 chaperone to attend LDCEI

Conclusion • We have a unique opportunity in FL for mentoring young black men • We need MOT to fulfill our mission and all brothers should invest in its success • Brothers will be welcomed to contribute their skills and should sign up for commitments today • The calendar is finalized for this year • Two new initiatives are being added: LDCEI and Brother to Brother • The info packet can be forwarded to interested youth
