Sustainable development in Hong Kong means • Finding ways to promote economic success • Improving the quality of life • Reducing pollution and waste • Meeting our own needs and aspirations without threatening the prospects of future generation • Protecting the environment and preserving natural resources in both local and nearby regions

  3. Some problems • High unemployment rate • Land under pressure from growing population • Increasing domestic waste and pollution • Heritage resources under threat from urban encroachment and new town development……..

  8. Citizens should • 5Rs (reduce, reuse,recycle, replace and reject) • Reduce energy consumption • Use less water and less hot water • Reduce waste e.g. bring your own bag • Reuse materials • Recycle e.g paper, aluminium cans

  9. Walk or cycling for short trips • Use public transport • Join conservation activities e.g. tree planting • Subsidize green groups e.g. Friends of the earth

  10. Business sector • Design energy-saving and green buildings • Maintain office equipment to avoid wasting of energy • Develop recycling industries • Use eco-friendly machinery • Use timber products from sustainable forests

  11. Recycle and reuse remains e.g. Cathay Pacific uses remaining aircraft meals to produce organic fertilizer • Sponsor environmental campaigns and education

  12. HKSAR government • Implement sustainable development principle through legislation • Careful planning in urban renewal and new town development • Green town • Heritage preservation

  13. Promoting economic success: cyberport, new tourist spots, comprehensive transportation and logistics system • Protecting and enhancing the environment: impose ‘polluter pays’ principle’; environmental impact assessment; reducing pollution..etc

  14. More than 10 departments / units are responsible for environmental protection and sustainable development e.g Sustainable Development Council • Use sustainable indicators to decide whether a proposed development is sustainable or not

  15. Develop renewable and cleaner energy e.g. solar energy • Develop energy-saving technology • Consult and involve the community in the process of sustainable development • Subsidize green groups and recycling industries • Educate the public
