  1. Tailoring the Structures of 1-D Nanoparticle SuperstructuresNathaniel L. Rosi, University of Pittsburgh, DMR 0954380 Nanoparticles exhibit unique physical properties which make them attractive building blocks for constructing next-generation functional materials. To control the properties of these materials, we must be able to precisely control the placement and registry of nanoparticles within these materials. We have developed new methodology that allows for rational control of nanoparticle assembly into complex 1-D nanoparticle superstructures. We have shown that we can tailor the structures and metrics of these superstructures. In particular, we can control the size of the nanoparticles within the assembly, the density of particles within the assembly, and the interparticle spacing within the assembly. All of these are important structural parameters which will impact the material properties.
