  3. Starter - What is a metal? hard, gas, shiny, porous, ductile, conducts electricity, insulator, brittle, malleable, weak, soluble (dissolves) can be hammered into shape, soluble. From this list can you pick out properties of metals?

  5. What is an ore? • Look at the examples of metal ores that you have on the tables. • Can you match the metal ore to the following: • Copper • Iron • Lead • Tin

  6. Challenge question • Why do you think some of these substances look nothing like a metal? • These substances are compounds with other elements and do not have the same properties as the metal element.

  7. An economic argument? • It costs a lot of money to extract metals from the compounds they are found in. Why is it worth it? • In your book write a list of all the things that we use metals for.

  10. Obtaining lead from its ore Due to its position on the reactivity series it is possible to obtain lead from its ore using carbon. This process is called REDUCTION. We are going to do this practically today.
