  2. The New Hire • Exempt (teachers, executive, administrative, or professional) • These folks are “generally” salaried and do not receive overtime.

  3. The New Hire, cont’d • Non-exempt (Classified or hourly staff) • These folks (those making less than $47,476 per year or $913.00/ per week) would be paid overtime for any hours worked in excess of 40 hrs in a workweek. The new threshold effective date is 12/1/16.

  4. Certified employees are eligible for overtime compensation if performance of both coaching and teaching exceeds 40 hours in the workweek.

  5. False • If teachers are also coaching for you there is no concern regarding overtime. • There is concern however if you have a person coaching for you that is not a teacher or is not a district employee. • You may want to consider having all coaches keep a timecard. Just a thought.

  6. 2. If a person is hired as office manager and paid on a salary basis with main duties consisting of scheduling employees, bookkeeping and answering the phone, they do not need to be paid overtime.

In short, they don’t make hiring/firing decisions, they don’t supervise employees, they don’t manage the facility, and they do not make over $47,476 per year.

If you haven’t before, you will hear eventually from an agency for Child Support withholdings. • ** Dept of Labor, Wage and Hour Division 444-5600.

  11. Other: HSA’s, stay informed about the limits that an employee can contribute each calendar year. For 2016, $3,350 for single and $6,750 for family. If the employee is 55+, they can contribute an additional $1,000. The minimum deductible to participate in a HSA is $1,300 for single; and $2,600 for family in 2016. Consult your plan provider for more details. Also, if you have an HRA, you cannot participate in an HSA until your HRA is exhausted. Check with your providers ie, Allegiance, American Fidelity, etc. 403b’s are another area that you should be aware of annual limits. The most that can be contributed to a 403(b) account through employee elective deferrals by means of a salary reduction agreement is $18,000 for 2016. Again, employees 50+ years old can contribute an additional $5,500. Check out www.403bwise.com
