  1. Immigration Statistics • Nearly 850,000 immigrants were granted legal permanent resident status in 2000, an increase of 200,000 from the previous year. • Leading countries of origin are Mexico (173,919), the People’s Republic of China (45,652), the Philippines (42,474), India (42,4206), and Vietnam (26,747). • These five countries represented 39% of all immigrants.

  2. Refugees • At the beginning of each fiscal year, the president, after consultation with congress, sets a worldwide refugee admissions ceiling. • The authorized ceiling was decreased from 91,000 in 1999 to 90,000 in 2000.
