  3. 4 Types of Learning • We all learn in a variety of ways, but what is most effective? • About 10% Transmission • About 20% Acquisition • About 70% Accretion • Only 1-2% Emergence • Using interactive activities: • Improves Attentiveness • Improves Retention • Incorporates FUN!

  4. Adult Learners • Know your audience. Adults have special learning needs. • Autonomous & Self-directed • Life experience/Knowledge • Goal-oriented • Relevancy-oriented • Practical • Need Respect

SHIP’s Log: Why We Need Interactive Activities Stardate 1997: BBA adds Medicare + Choice (now Medicare Advantage) to SHIPs counseling services Stardate 1999: SHIPs tweak training re: BBRA Stardate 2003: MMA rocks the SHIPs with discount drug cards, Medicare Part D & many other changes. Stardate 2006: SHIPs are a key resource for initial enrollment into Part D Stardate 2007: SHIPs services extended to include assistance with new issues - premium withholding issues - marketing concerns

  6. SHIPs Training Challenges • Ensuring staff/volunteers remain current on ever- changing regulations and procedures • Avoiding burnout and frustration • Keeping audience engaged during public presentations and trainings Always remember to L.A.F. (Keep it LIGHT and FUN!)
