Poland , Russia, and Japan were also devastated WWII kills 75 million worldwide (Soviet Union suffers the most, 22 million) In Germany, the Allies held war crime trials in Nuremberg (many Nazi receive death sentences) Trials expose and discredit the Nazi, fascist ideas

United Nations International Peace Organization April 1945, 50 nations draft a charter for the UN Had a Security Council w/ 5 members ( US, Soviet Union, Britain, France, China) Council could veto any decision Took on issues such as preventing diseases and improving education and aiding nations

  4. Grumbling Alliance Germany was devastated.. France and GB were drained US and Soviet Union were strong economically and militarily Distrust between US and Soviet Union leads to Cold War

  5. Cold War Stalin wanted to spread communism into Europe. FDR wanted free elections in Europe. By 1948, Stalin had installed communist governments in Europe. Churchill had always distrusted Stalin “Iron Curtain” was symbol of Cold War… “Fear of growing communism”…. Division of Europe East Europe dominated by Soviets; West Europe by US

  6. Truman Doctrine Marshall Plan(1947) • America would resist Soviet expansion in Europe or elsewhere (send aid). The idea was containment or limiting communism. • Massive aid package • US funnels food and money to help rebuild Europe

Germany Berlin Airlift • Soviet Union dismantles their factories and resources. • West Germany= democratic nations • East Germany= communistic government • Berlin was occupied by Allies • 1948, Stalin tries to force Allies out by sealing off all RR and highways into west of city • Western Powers brought food fuel to Berlin

  8. 1949 1955 • NATO pledge to help one another if attacked • US has advantage with the A Bomb • 1949 Stalin’s scientist develops bomb • US and USSR race to develop more deadly weapons • Soviet Union responds by forming the Warsaw Pact with 7 satellite states in East Europe

  9. Propaganda Both sides used propaganda US defends capitalism, democracy Soviet Union criticizes western imperialism The Cold War last for 40 years
