Great Pyramids of Giza • Located near Cairo, Egypt • There are 3 pyramids: Khufu, Khafra, and Menkuria and they were built as tombs • Khufu is the largest and for more than 4,000 years was the world’s largest building • Scientists believe that Egyptians used log rollers and sledges to move stones into place Picmonkey

3. Hanging Gardens of Babylon • Built in modern day Iraq in 600 B.C. • Planted as high as 75 ft. • Was built for the king’s lover’s home sickness • To survive, a system of a pump, water wheel, and cisterns were needed • No proof of gardens in Babylonian cuneiform inscriptions

Statue of Zeus at Olympia • Crafted by Athenian sculptor Phidias and placed in Temple of Zeus • The temple is at Olympia, the original home of the Olympics • Built around mid-fifth century B.C. • The statue is of Zeus sitting bare chested in a wooden throne with the arm rests designed as carved sphinxes • The statue was moved in 4th century A.D. to Constantinople where a fire may have destroyed it in 462 A.D. Temple of Artemis at Ephesus • There was more than one temple, many were destroyed and then rebuilt • Ephesus was a Greek port city on the west coast of modern Turkey • The best of the statues were two marble temples built around 550 B.C. • Designed by the Cretan architect Chersiphron and his son Metagenes • The last temple was burned in 262 A.D. and scientists first dug up the ruins in the 1860s

Massoleum at Halicarnassus • Located in modern day Turkey • It is a tomb built by Aretmisia for her husband Mausolus, who was also her brother, the king of Carnia after his death in 353 B.C • Made entirely of white marble and was 135 ft high. • The Masoleum was destroyed in a 13th century earthquake Picture: Hyperlink to website

Colossus of Rhodes • An enormous bronze sculpture of the sun god Helios, built in 12 years by Rhodians in the 3rd Century B.C. • Designed by the sculptor Chares • 100 f.t. tall • Toppled by an earthquake and never rebuilt hundreds of years later, Arabs invaded Rhodes and sold the remains as scrap metal.

Lighthouse of Alexandria • Located on the small island of Pharis near Alexandria • Designed by Greek architect Sostratous around 270 B.C. • The structure had 3 tiers • Mordern scholars believed it was about 380 ft tall before destroyed by earthquakes • Some of its remains have since been discovered at the bottom of the Nile
