  1. Some Things That Deceive Deuteronomy 11:16 – “Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them.”

  2. 1. False Teachers • Proverbs 12:17 • 17He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit. (cf. Matt. 7:15-16) • 1 John 4:1 • 1Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. • 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 • 13For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. 15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

  3. 2. Riches • Matthew 13:22 • 22He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. • 1 Timothy 6:10 • 10For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. • Matthew 16:26 • 26For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

  4. 3. Strong Drink • Proverbs 20:1 • 1Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. • Proverbs 23:29-35 • 29Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? 30They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. 31Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. 32At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. 33Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. 34Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. 35They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

  5. 4. Satan • 2 Corinthians 11:3 • 3But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. • Revelation 12:9 • 9And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. • 1 Peter 5:8 • 8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour. • cf. 2 Thess. 2:9-12 9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

  6. 5.Not Reaping What You Sow • Galatians 6:7-8 • 7Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. • Hosea 8:7 • 7For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.

  7. 6.Failure To Control Your Tongue • James 1:26 • 26If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. • James 3:6 • 6And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. • Proverbs 13:3 • 3He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

  8. 7.Your Own Self • 1 Corinthians 3:18 • 18Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. • Galatians 6:3 • 3For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

  9. 8.Placing Faith In Tomorrow • Proverbs 27:1 • 1Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. • James 4:13-15 • 13Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: 14Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
