Radio Communication Project Debut Phase from late 1994 to early 1997 Logic Model Inputs Outputs: Activities Participation Outcomes – Impact Short Term Medium Term Long Term • Partners: HMG of Nepal, MOH, USAID, NHEICC, National Health Training Center, JHU/PCS, Village Development Committees • The Redline Strategy • National service delivery quality guidelines for Nepal from Association for Voluntary and Safe Contraception and John Snow International • Nepal Medical Standards Guide • Radios for health posts in Dang District • 134 health works in Dang • Distance education listening guide, feedback forms, exam • Observation checklist • JHU/CCP assistance: • Development of IEC and IPC/C training curricula • Expansion of local capacity for communication research and program implementation • Develop IEC policy • Message design and production management for mass media products • Expansion of institutional capacity of the MOH, its divisions, & private sector • Service Providers: • Formal IPC/C training workshops in Dang • Behavioral modeling and interactive distance education radio program, Service Brings Reward • Pre-post written exam • Observations of client-provider interactions • Print materials: discussion guides & aerograms • Posters, leaflets, wall hangings, flipcharts • Clients: • 57 episodes of Cut Your Coat entertainment education radio drama serial • Radio spots & musical jingles for Cut Your Coat • Baseline & Follow-up surveys, exit interviews, interactivity sessions, clinic service statistics • Formal IPC/C training of 88 health workers • Exposure to Service Brings Reward at end of service day for clinic staff discussion • Exposure to Cut Your Coat Service Providers Knowledge of IPC/C techniques Increase in client participation in the interaction Increase in quality of service provider-client communication and counseling Family planning technical knowledge • Incorporate IPC/C training modules in all levels of health service providers curriculum • Local NGOs & donor agencies participating in IPC/C activities and IEC campaigns Improved image of service providers Attitudes towards family planning • Exposure to the RCP radio intervention (both Cut Your Coat & Service Brings Reward) • Interpersonal communication between husbands (decision makers) and wives and among members of the community • Flow of MCH clients to two clinics • Exposure to distance education program Clients • Knowledge about contraceptives • Family planning-related attitudes: • Image of family planning users • Expectations of health worker behavior & services • Son preference / gender bias • Perception of family planning benefits for family Increase spousal communication for family planning decisions • Increase in service utilization • Contraception use • Modern family planning use Satisfy 28% of married women’s unmet need for contraception in Nepal Spousal communication and approval Perceived normative support from own community Family planning discussion with health worker
