  1. May, Mayroon, Wala To have there is/was/were/will be

  2. May/Mayroon MAY (to have) or its alternate MAYROON expresses actual possession when the possessor is present in the sentence. Without the possessor, it means THERE IS. Both do not express specific time or time relationship. The use of adverb of time is needed. (Aspillera, Basic Tagalog)

  3. MAY • Is used with nouns with or without modifiers. Nor marker is needed between may and the noun. Halimbawa: May kaibigan ako sa Thailand. Pattern: _________________________ May bago siyang aklat. Pattern: _________________________ Si Helen ay may magandang bahay. Pattern: _________________________ May mga bulaklak sa hardin. (no possessor) Pattern: _________________________ May mayayamang tao sa Pilipinas. (no possessor) Pattern: _________________________

  4. MAY + ACTOR FOCUS VERBS If the verb in an indefinite may phrase is AF, the sentence has no topic. This sentence is often equivalent to English sentences with an indefinite pronoun (someone or something) as subject. May darating bukas.(Someone is coming tomorrow) May dumarating araw-araw. .(Someone comes everyday) May dumating kahapon.(Someone came yesterday)

  5. An INDEFINITE MAY PHRASE may include a verb and a noun that partially specifies the person, thing or place, etc. to which the verb refers. The noun may either precede or follow the verb or verb phrase. A linker is used in between the noun and verb phrase. In English, this is equivalent to an indefinite noun phrase, i.e. a phrase consisting of A/AN or SOME plus a noun. May estudyanteng dumating sa bahay kahapon. (A student came to the house yesterday.) May dumating sa bahay kahapon (Someone came to the house yesterday.)

  6. May +Object FOCUS VERBS If the verb in an indefinite may phrase is OF, the sentence has a topic which represents the performer/actor of the action of the verb. NOTE: The performer/actor is NOT marked by a NG phrase as it is in regular OF sentence. Instead, actor is marked with ang/ang mga or si/sina. May ginawa ang Amerikano. The American did something. May gagawin si Juan. Juan is going to do something. May sinulat ako. _________________ May lulutuin si Ben sa kusina. ___________________

  7. Mayroon +verb Mayroon akong isusulat mamaya. I have something to write later. Mayroong isusulat si Ben mamaya. Ben has something to write later. Mayroon nagluto kanina. Mayroong magbabasa ng balita bukas ng umaga.

  8. MAY + gusto/ayaw May gustong gawin sina Ben at Mila. Pattern: _________________________ May gusto silang gawin. Pattern: _________________________ Mayroong gustong gawin sina Ben at Mila. Pattern: _________________________ Mayroon silang gustong gawin. Pattern: _________________________

  9. WALA • This is the opposite of may/mayroon. • It means the absence of someone or something Walang bahay si Ben. Pattern: _________________________ Wala siyang bahay. Pattern: _________________________ Walang dumating sa salu-salo sa bahay. Pattern: _________________________ Walang kinakain ang mga bata sa bahay. Pattern: _________________________
