  2. PURPOSE OF LRIT TO ENABLE CONTRACTING GOVERNMENTS TO SOLAS TO UNDERTAKE THE LONG-RANGE IDENTIFICATION AND TRACKING OF SHIPS APPROACHING THEIR SHORES

  3. WHICH SHIPS? FOLLOWING SHIPS ENGAGED ON INTERNATIONAL VOYAGES: • PASSENGER SHIPS • CARGO SHIPS, 300 GRT AND ABOVE • MOBILE OFFSHORE DRILLING UNITS

  4. WHAT INFORMATION? THE SHIP SHALL AUTOMATICALLY TRANSMIT THE FOLLOWING INFO: - IDENTITY OF THE SHIP (IMO NO.) - SHIP POSITION (LAT AND LONG) - DATE AND TIME OF POSITION

  5. EXCEPTIONS TRANSMISSION MAY CEASE – • WHERE INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS, REGS, ETC. PROVIDE FOR PROTECTION OF NAVIGATION INFORMATION; OR - OPERATION IS CONSIDERED BY THE MASTER TO COMPROMISE SAFETY OR SECURITY OF THE SHIP

  6. LOCATED WHERE? • SHIPS FLYING THE FLAG OF THE CONTRACTING GOVT – ANYWHERE • SHIPS INDICATING THEIR INTENTION TO CALL AT A PORT OF THE CONTRACTING GOVT – ANYWHERE • SHIPS NOT INTENDING TO CALL AT A PORT OF THE CONTRACTING GOVT – WITHIN 1000 MILES OF ITS COAST

  7. EXCEPTION A CONTRACTING GOVT MAY NOT RECEIVE LRIT INFORMATION ABOUT A SHIP LOCATED WITHIN THE TERRITORIAL SEA OF ANOTHER CONTRACTING GOVT WHOSE FLAG THE SHIP IS ENTITLED TO FLY

  8. DATES • NEW REGULATION 19-1 OF CHAPTER V OF SOLAS ENTERS INTO FORCE ON JAN 1, 2008 • SHIPS MUST BE FITTED WITH SYSTEM TO AUTOMATICALLY TRANSMIT INFO: - SHIPS CONSTRUCTED ON OR AFTER DECEMBER 31, 2008 - SHIPS CONTRUCTED BEFORE DEC 31, 2008, NOT LATER THAN FIRST SURVEY OF RADIO INSTALLATION AFTER JULY 1, 2009

  9. COSTS • CONTRACTING GOVT SHALL BEAR ALL COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH ANY LRIT INFO THEY REQUEST & RECEIVE • UNLESS NATIONAL LEGISLATION PROVIDES OTHERWISE, SHIPS FLYING AN ADMINISTRATION’S FLAG SHALL NOT INCUR ANY CHARGES FOR TRANSMITTING LRIT INFO

  10. CONTRACTING GOVTS SHALL • RECOGNIZE IMPORTANCE OF LRIT INFO • RECOGNIZE/RESPECT COMMERCIAL CONFIDENTIALITY AND SENSITIVITY OF LRIT INFO RECEIVED • PROTECT INFO THEY RECEIVE FROM UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS OR DISCLOSURE • USE LRIT INFO THEY RECEIVE CONSISTENT WITH INTERNATIONAL LAW

  11. SHIPBORNE EQUIPMENT • CAPABLE OF AUTOMATICALLY TRANSMITTING SHIP’S LRIT INFO AT 6-HOUR INTERVALS • CAPABLE OF BEING CONFIGURED REMOTELY TO TRANSMIT LRIT INFO AT VARIABLE INTERVALS • CAPABLE OF TRANSMITTING LRIT INFO FOLLOWING RECEIPT OF POLLING COMMANDS

  12. SHIPBORNE EQUIPMENT • INTERFACE DIRECTLY WITH SHIPBORNE NAVIGATION SATELLITE SYSTEM EQUIPMENT • BE SUPPLIED WITH ENERGY FROM THE MAIN AND EMERGENCY SOURCE OF ELECTRICAL POWER • BE TESTED FOR ELECTROMAGNETIC COMPATIBILITY (IMO RES A.813(19))
