  5. How did it start? Katie went to TAGT Andrea went to TCEA • District media contest • TAGT 2010, went to a seminars on student film making and other Web 2.0 technologies and student reading habits • Learned about a lot of neat technology • Wanted to have a technology club • Wanted a reading club • Observed reading levels in 4th and 5th graders went down or stayed the same • Kids were not getting time in the lab to explore on their own

  7. Research Behind the Idea Why do we need to help kids make the connection between books and digital media?

GT Reasons National Association for the Gifted, 2000 State Board Educator Certification (SBEC), 2001 Texas Education Agency (TEA), 2009 • Teachers are expected to collaborate to meet the unique needs of gifted kids • Students should create independent projects leading to professional-level products • Students need audiences outside the classroom and school • We must address the arts, leadership, and creativity. • Opportunities must be provided in voluntary environments outside the regular school day. • State of-the-art technology to support appropriate services should be provided. Why do we need a program like this?

First Steps to Building the Club • Submitted a proposal to principal • Chose a book, day, time, and place • Found funding, bought books • Created application and spread the word • Found activities online to supplement book, created a timeline for activities • Decided on end product-Digital Media Contest • Built our webpage and blog

Things We Learned/Challenges • Recruitment of members • Blogging- Unwanted participants • Kids not blogging on their own • Unsupportive parents • Competing with other afterschool events • Losing club members to rezoning of schools • Funding for books • How to make use of blogging tools like pre-scheduling posts.

  21. Grants • We were recently awarded over $3000 from the Copperas Cove Education Foundation to help fund books, zip drives, T-Shirts, and a trip to Medieval Times in Dallas to support the theme of our last book.
