  1. Project: Daniela Leitner in the Nuclear Sciences Division required a high temperature crucible oven for the ion source/injector. Their present oven was capable of reaching only around 500 C, and in order to use a greater variety of materials, a higher temperature of around near 1000 C was desired. The challenges: The business end of the oven needs to reach around 900 C, but is located almost 15” away from the vacuum flange. Thermal isolation was also required to keep the surrounding structure from overheating. Lastly, the whole oven, shielding, and structure had to fit into a 1” x 0.75” envelope! Vendor lead times were also an issue, since the whole project was supposed to last only about 5 weeks. The Solution: A great deal of communication took place between the vendors in order to supply the required components (material, heater wire, etc.) in time. In parallel, LBNL’s main shop fabricated most of the parts, and an almost daily communication was required to keep things on track. Project Name:High Temp.
