    2. Characters Walt Masters a boy whose dad is out prospecting for quartz. Lauren Hall an old man who has frostbitten feet ,and he is not able to go stake his claim. Stampeders they are people who try to move the stakes on Lauren Hall’s claim.

    3. Setting This story takes place in Yukon Territory near Alaska. It is set in the year 1896 when the gold rush started.

    4. Plot The story begins with Walt Masters seeing of the stampeders moving Lauren Hall’s stakes. Walt takes it upon himself to claim Lauren Hall’s stake and catch the stampeders. He steals the stampeders’ sled and their dogs in order to go to Dawson. He gets shot at and whipped but yet he makes it to Dawson. He is called as The King of Mazy May.

    5. Conflict This story’s conflict is external. Walt must get Lauren Hall to Dawson so that the land that is rightfully his stays his. He is racing stampeders who wish to cheat Lauren Hall out of his land.

    6. Theme The main idea or basic meaning of a literary work. The theme of the story is to help those who can not help themselves. Walt helps Lauren Hall claim his stake.
