What’s in a name?. Shakespeare was considered in the decisions he made – look for clues. Do you like your name? Do you know why your parents chose it? Do you think your name suits you? Do you think other students’ names suits them? Do certain names suggest a certain type of person?.

  1. What’s in a name? Shakespeare was considered in the decisions he made – look for clues

  2. Do you like your name? • Do you know why your parents chose it? • Do you think your name suits you? • Do you think other students’ names suits them? • Do certain names suggest a certain type of person?

What does the name Romeo suggest? • Unusual but used to describe someone being romantic– • due to links with the Romeo and Juliet play • Also because of first syllable ‘rom’ – ‘romantic’ and the lilting ‘o’ sound at the end • What does the name Juliet suggest? • A more common name • Consider the individual syllable sounds…’jewel’?

Mercutio, Benvolio, Tybalt, Paris • (Form a circle) • Which two characters sound like they might be Romeo’s friends? • Mercutio and Benvolio are both lilting names ending in ‘o’. • Look in a dictionary – what might elements of these names suggest? • Mercutio- ‘mercurial’ – eloquent, quick-witted and volatile • Ben - ‘benefactor’, ‘benefit’ – someone trying to do good • Volio – voluntary/ volunteer (willing/ wishing)

Tybalt and Paris have different sounding names – they belong to a different group – Juliet, Tybalt, Capulet • Tybalt • Sounds a bit like ‘Tibbles’ – a cat – Mercutio picks up on this in the main fight scene between the two of them • Tybaltis Juliet’s cousin, known as ‘King of cats’ • Any ideas on name associations with Paris? • Capital of France • A Trojan Prince – abducted Helen of Troy in the Greek legend, therefore starting the Trojan war.
