  2. Purpose The purpose of this unit is to provide instruction on how to download and install the LibX plug-in for the Firefox browser on a computer

  3. Instructional Objectives Upon completion of this instructional unit, participants will be able to use a computer with internet access and Firefox browser to: • Successfully download/install the Virginia Tech LibX edition for Firefox from the library Web page • Complete a search on a given topic using Google Scholar to test for correct functioning of the plug-in • Correctly identify the LibX icon on search results to confirm LibX installation

  4. Introduction • LibX is a browser plug-in that creates a portable gateway to online library resources • LibX allows a library user to search the library’s electronic resources from any location on the Web

  5. Introduction There are two versions of LibX available: • Firefox • Internet Explorer

  6. LibX Advantages • It is an open-source software, which means it is freely available • LibX facilitates effective and efficient research by providing a one-stop-shopping location

  7. LibX Advantages…continued • You can search Addison (The Library catalog) directly from the LibX toolbar or using the right-click context menu • LibX provides seamless navigation between and among resources

  9. Go to the Virginia Tech Main Page From the Left Column Click Libraries

  10. Click the Off Campus Sign-in

  11. Sign in with your PID and Password

  12. Select LibX Browser Plug-in from Library Quick Links

  13. Select Click here to install LibXfor Firefox

  14. Error Message After clicking to install, you might get the message: Firefox prevented this site (www.lib.vt.edu.exproxy.lib.vt.edu) from asking you to install software on your computer

  15. If You Get the Error Message Click Allow

  16. If this Pops up Click Install Now

  17. Select Enable LibXToolbar then click OK

  18. Restart Firefox

  19. Testing LibX…

  20. Check to see that the LibX icon is imbedded in the browser

  21. Go to: http://scholar.google.com • Search for any one of: • Teaching effectiveness in technology-mediated distance learning • Instructional design for distance education • An instructional design framework for authentic learning environment

  22. Results List If you see the Get VText icon shown below next to some of your results, you have successfully installed LibX on your computer: Get VText

  23. End You have completed the testing phase and are ready to use LibX If you did not see the icon, troubleshoot and repeat the installation
