Structures • VET responsibility now spread across Department of Education & Training: • Office of Training and Tertiary Education (purchasing & regulation) • Office of Learning and Teaching (learning & teaching, post compulsory pathways) • Office of Strategy & Review (data analysis, Commonwealth-State relations)

  3. OLT Focus • Support VLESC • Drive excellence in learning & teaching across whole portfolio - all sectors • Lead through strategy built on research & innovation – entrench good evidence as basis for policy decisions • Identify & act on opportunities for collaboration & progress

  4. Key propositions: schools • All students can learn • Students/teachers make a difference • Student “effort” a powerful independent factor in achievement • An assessment culture essential for value-add

  5. Essential Learning Standards • Three core interrelated strands: • - Physical, Personal & Social Learning • - Discipline-based Learning • - Interdisciplinary Learning Integration: principles, pedagogy, Standards, assessment, reporting

  6. VET Context • Inquiry into VET announced: • Among other things, will investigate training models and associated resources required to meet the needs of the full range of VET students

  7. VET Context Review of Training Packages looked at TP integration with teaching, learning & assessment – some confusion: • Occupational Vs training standards • Specification of VET in Training Packages, learning design, resources to support delivery • Curriculum Vs methods of teaching/pedagogy

  8. VET Context Review also found that – ideally - flexibility can mean: • Innovation & flexibility in learning design • New understandings about vocational & workplace learning • Lively debate about learning design & teaching approaches

  9. Opportunities? • Anecdotal demand for more support materials for Training Packages • Feedback from some TAFE Directors • Would value additional support around learning & teaching – including debate • Particularly curriculum development/ support materials • Other opportunities?
