  1. You belong to a noble family that has produced many great knights. One day your uncle, the head of the family, tells you that the pope has called on warriors to defend holy places in a faraway land. Your uncle is too old to fight, so it falls on you to answer the pope’s call to war. The journey will be long & dangerous. Still, you will see new places and possibly win glory for you family.   2. The Crusades (“marked with a cross”)Chapter 18 Section 2 • Big Idea: The Christian & Muslim cultures fought over holy sites during a series of medieval wars.

Causes of the Crusades • For many years the Muslims & Christians lived in peace in Palestine. • Late 1000s, Turkish Muslims captured Jerusalem & attacked Christian pilgrims. • AttackedConstantinople • Byzantine Emperor asked for help • The Crusades were a fought over the Holy Land to control Palestine, region in SW Asia.

Crusades "Free the Holy Land!" • Pope Urban II called on Christians to take back the Holy Land • Crusaders flocked for reasons of: • Land & treasure, glory, & adventure • 1st Crusade • 1096- 1st Crusaders were peasants, slaughtered • 1099- Knights defeated Muslims & took over Jerusalem, set up 4 small kingdoms to trade with Europe. 50 years later Muslims took back Jerusalem • 2nd, 3rd, & 4th Crusades • 1147- 2nd Crusade embarrassing Christian loss • 1189- 3rd Crusade King Richard I “Lion Heart” fought Saladin unsuccessful • 1201- 4th Crusade- Knights destroyed Venice & Constantinople

Reasons for Christian failure & Effects • Failures • Distant war • Unprepared for desert climate • Poorly planned (to much in fighting) • Outnumbered by organized Muslim foes • Effects • New trade markets b/w Europe & Asia • Kings became more powerful (gained land) • Tension b/w Christians, Muslims, & Jews continue
