  1. Charleroi Val de Sambre and the Brazil Background: • A member of our club (Michel ANDRE, future governor of our district) happens to be the chairman of a NGO (Japabel) whose aim was to support economic development in Brazil. • Unfortunately IN 1999 another member of our club, Paul PETIT, lost his daughter Virginie in a car crash.

  2. Charleroi Val de Sambre and the Brazil Project : - Paul wished to spend his insurance « compensation » of 12500 € (about 9900£) for the demise of his daughter in a meaningful manner, in her memory. - The Mayor of Timóteo (town in the South of Brazil) wanted to tear down an urban slum and rehouse the 3,000 slum dwellers.

  3. Charleroi Val de Sambre and the Brazil And so a partnership agreement was signed between: -the NGO JAPABEL of our member Michel ANDRE, -the Rotary Club of Charleroi Val de Sambre, -the local brazilian Rotary club ‘Acesita’, -The Municipality of Timóteo.

  4. Charleroi Val de Sambre and the Brazil -The Mayor convinced the organization ‘Homeless movement’ to build 500 family homes; -To persuade this movement, and to convince the people to leave the slum, the agreement set up the build of a community centre to attract people around it, in a properly equipped environment (sewers, drinkable water,…)

  5. Charleroi Val de Sambre and the Brazil So the NGO and the municipality would build this ‘Centro de Convivencia’ (community centre) by means of the human technological capability of the Rotary club of ‘Acesita’, and the matching grant of the Belgian Government who multiplied by three the first amount of 9900 £, increasing it up to 39.600 £.

  6. Charleroi Val de Sambre and the Brazil The 2 Rotary clubs (Charleroi Val de Sambre and Acesita) would furnish and equip the centre thanks to a rotarian ‘matching grant’ from THE ROTARY FOUNDATION.

  7. Charleroi Val de Sambre and the Brazil To increase its input our club organized a ‘Brazilian night’ and raised 25,000 € (+/- 20,000 £) for the project.

  8. Charleroi Val de Sambre and the Brazil • the centre has been operational since July 2009. It has a community kitchen, a surgery, several classrooms, sanitation, conference rooms and activities rooms. - This centre provides people in need (adults or children) with diverse trainings : reading, writing, sewing, cooking, I.T. and so on.

  9. Charleroi Val de Sambre and the Brazil -More than 1000 people received a qualification, and more than 500 found a job in the close cities. -From 2013 to 2015 the centre was extended: the open ground floor was closed to house a school for physically challenged people (67 students). - This school is called ‘Escola padre Jean-Marie LEMAIRE’, after the name of a Belgian catholic priest, close relation of Michel ANDRE.

  10. Charleroi Val de Sambre and the Brazil • Jean-Marie LEMAIRE spent his life in this area of Brazil, spreading comfort and helping the needy people. He was a honorary member of our club, and was our go-between with the local authority. • Unfortunately he died on the 14th of November, 2013. We have lost a friend.

  11. Charleroi Val de Sambre and the Brazil Without the common input of the 2 ROTARY CLUBS of CHARLEROI and ACESITA, and the help of the ROTARY FOUNDATION, this project would not have achieved success, and could not maintain the level of services.
