  1. UCL Site Report 2002 • Transfer to Linux • CDF system • Windows & Laptops • Storage • Printing & Networking • Future • Issues UCL Site Report 2002 (Bob Cranfield)

  2. Transfer to Linux • Transfer to PC-based Linux well advanced: • all desktops now PCs: most Linux, some NT (connecting to Linux machines via Exceed) • down to 2 Alphas (one for residual batch, other used to be main system machine) • apart from CDF facility, all machines are desktop style (some dedicated e.g. secure logger, cvs) • newer desktops purchased as dual-processor PCs for cost-effective cpu • mail & Web servers separate for security (mail is Web-accessible via ssh & ssl) • printing (CUPS) is distributed UCL Site Report 2002 (Bob Cranfield)

  3. CDF system • CDF/Minos JIF award • same system at Oxford, Glasgow, Liverpool, UCL (similar, but bigger, at RAL + some kit at Fermilab) • Intel 8-processor IBM system, running RedHat • 2x 0.5 TB fibre-attached SCSI RAID arrays • redundant power supplies & disk controllers • recently added 40-slot AIT-3 tape robot UCL Site Report 2002 (Bob Cranfield)

  4. Windows / Laptops • Windows facilities provided via: • NT desktops + Exceed for some users (esp. h/w) • 1 public NT desktop + Exceed • vmware on a couple of laptops • StarOffice • about to install WTS (NT4) + Citrix Metaframe • also interested in CrossOffice (wine) & win4lin • Laptops • buy them when we can -- allocated or pool • usually dual-bootable • very productive (need never stop working!) UCL Site Report 2002 (Bob Cranfield)

  5. Storage • Disk • Recently purchased two SCSI-attached IDE RAID arrays • 1.4 TB each (12x 120 GB hot-swap cartridges) • one array used for main file-store (users + data) • other array used for backup (dump over nfs) • Tape • 2 of our 3 DLTs have died • planning to share new CDF AIT-3 tape robot (for archival backup of RAID storage) UCL Site Report 2002 (Bob Cranfield)

  6. Printing & Networking • Printing • all Group printing on 3 heavy(ish)-duty printers • still surviving (each is backup for the others) • HP 5SiMX A3 full-duplex mono laser printer with extra paper trays • Tektronix 340 A4 solid-ink printer • Tektronix 560 A4 colour laser printer • Networking • 3Com 10/100 Mbps switch stack with Gigabit uplink to College backbone • playing with wireless (Orinoco RG) UCL Site Report 2002 (Bob Cranfield)

  7. Future • Replace ~1/3 of our desktops • Gradually increase number of laptops • Add cpu farm for non-CDF work (Beowulf?) • Add more IDE RAID (split data & user files) • Enhance CDF tape robot • Replace 2 of our printers? • Bring Gig Ether right through to chosen machines (esp. for GRID work) UCL Site Report 2002 (Bob Cranfield)

  8. Issues • Project work leaves no time for system work (as ever) • Still not devoting enough resources to security • Windows access may be ok for desktops, but what about laptops? • Laptops are another potential management headache -- no uniform solution UCL Site Report 2002 (Bob Cranfield)
