In the southwestern culture, mules are important modes of transportation and carrying items of trade. Most people tied their stuff to the mule's back and walked alongside it. Pieles de oveja = sheepskins. Stacked and used as a bed. Josephina walked on this so her footsteps wouldn't make noise. Collar = Necklace. Josephina's aunt gave her a necklace as a present toward the end of the book. Riachuelo/Clothes Canasto/Basket Rebozo/Protect Canasto = basket. Josephina carries clothes to the river in it. Riachuelo = creek. Where they wash the clothes. Rebozo = a sort of headdress they wear to protect their scalps from the sun.
