  4. Time line of events • August 10, 1945 after WW II the US and Soviets divide Korea at 38th parallel

  5. March 1950 • CIA notices LOTS of North Korean troops by South Korean boarder. UH OH!

IT WOULD APPEAR FROM NATURE OF ATTACK AND MANNER IN WHICH IT WAS LAUNCHED IT CONSTITUTES ALL OUT OFFENSIVE AGAINST ROK. • US State Dept to President Truman

  7. In 1950, North Korea invaded the South. The US along with United Nations (UN) support sent troops to the South to prevent Communism from spreading into all of Korea

  8. At approximately 4:00 am, 90,000 North Korean troops, equipped with Soviet weapons, invade South Korea. South Korean forces are quickly forced to retreat. Truman orders U.S. naval and air forces—but not ground forces—to assist in the defense of South Korea.

  9. UN tells North Korea back off

  10. 1950-North Korea invades the South N. Korea is equipped with Chinese and Soviet weapons, crosses 38th parallel N. Korea achieved surprise and quick successes, captures 90% of the peninsula. Truman feared WWIII had started. U.S. troops in Japan come to S. Korea’s aid.

  11. U.N. forces under MacArthur cross the 38th parallel; later that same day, the United Nations General Assembly passes a resolution recommending “the establishment of a unified, independent and democratic Government in the sovereign State of Korea.”

  12. Some don’t agree • We have not achieved a clear and realistic and generally accepted view of our objectives in Korea and sectors of our public opinion and of our official establishment are indulging themselves in emotional, moralistic attitudes toward Korea which, unless corrected, can easily carry us toward real conflict with the Russians and inhibit us from making a realistic agreement about that area.

  13. Truman Leave Taiwan alone. Might provoke Chinese. Keep war in Korea Mad at MacArthur for promoting war against China. MacArthur Defend Taiwan against Chinese Chinese won’t do anything. Does favor war with China. Truman vs. MacArthur

  14. MacArthur canned • In a letter to House Republican leader Rep. Joseph R. Martin, MacArthur criticizes Truman’s refusal to wage a full-scale war against China. Disses boss in public! • Truman dismisses MacArthur from command. He is replaced by General Matthew Ridgeway.

  15. A Divided Korea - Still No peace treaty has been signed to this date!!!!! The two Koreas are divided by a heavily armed DMZ - demilitarized zone. North Korea still vows they will someday united the North and South. Today about 34,000 U.S. troops still stand guard on the Korean peninsula -

  16. When asked later in his life what was his toughest decision as President, Mr. Truman stated that it was the decision to enter the Korean War.
