  2. Poreč/Parenzo is a town on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula. The town's population of approximately 12,000 resides mostly on the outskirts. Poreč is a town with a long and turbulent history which nurtures remnants of its past in the heart of its old town. From Ancient Roman times to the present day more than two thousand years have passed, and the streets of Poreč continue to preserve their original architecture and numerous cultural and historical monuments. Of these we can especially note the Euphrasian Basilica with its distinctive mosaics dating from the 6th century which UNESCO recognised and protected as a world heritage site in 1997

  5. This area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. During the 2nd century BC, Roman Castrum was built on a tiny peninsula with approximate dimensions of 400 m × 200 m where the town centre is now. During the reign of Emperor Augustus in the 1st century, it officially became a city and was part of the Roman colony of Colonia Iulia Parentium. Quite apart from its variegated cultural and historical past (Roman, Byzantine, Austrian, Venetian), its most recent influence was Italian. Under the control of Italy until the end of World War II, Porec retains persuasive elements of a cuisine and style more Italian than Yugoslavian
