  1. CROATIA 22 Dubrovnik 3

  2. Historical lore indicates that Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th century on a rocky island named Laus, which is said to have provided shelter for refugees from the nearby city of Epidaurum. Another theory appeared in 2007, based on new archaeological excavations. New findings (a Byzantine basilica) clearly indicates that there was quite a large settlement at the time. After the Crusades, Dubrovnik came under the sovereignty of Venice (1205–1358). By the Peace Treaty of Zadar in 1358, Dubrovnik achieved relative independence as a vassal-state of the Kingdom of Hungary. Between the 14th century and 1808, Dubrovnik ruled itself as a free state, although it was a vassal from 1382 to 1804 of the Ottoman Empire and paid an annual tribute to its sultan

  3. The Dubrovnik Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary exists in its present day form from the early 18th century. According to historic records, the former Romanesque cathedral was an outstandingly luxurious church with a cupola, richly decorated with statues. Legend has it that it was built with the votive money which the English king Richard the Lion heart donated having survived a shipwreck near the Island of Lokrum in 1192 on his way back from the 3rd Crusade

  4. During the restoration works in 1981, the remains of another earlier cathedral were found (its origins between the 6th and 8th century) Sv Vlaho (St Blaise) depicted holding model of Dubrovnik. Cathedral Facade

  18. The Church of the Savior, built in 1528, is the only church in Dubrovnik that survived that 1667 earthquake

  19. The large complex of the Franciscan monastery is situated at the very beginning of Placa, to the left of the inner Pile Gate, next to the Holy Savior Church

  20. The Franciscan order arrived in Dubrovnik around 1234. The first Franciscan monastery was built in the 13th century in the Pile area on the spot what is today Hotel Hilton Imperial

  21. However as the City was threatened with war, in 1317, decision was made to demolish that monastery (Franciscan Monastery of St. Thomas) to prevent its use by the enemy in the eventual case that the City might be besieged

  22. The new monastery inside the City walls (Friars Minor monastery) was constructed the same year, in 1317, but the work on the monastery continued throughout centuries. This cloister was built in late Romanesque style by master MihojeBrajkov of Bar in 1360

  23. The large Franciscan church had been one of the richest churches in Dubrovnik at the time, when it was destroyed in the Great earthquake of 1667. The only element of the former building which has been preserved is the portal on the south wall

  24. The only element of the former building which has been preserved is the portal on the south wall

  25. The church was reconstructed in the Baroque style

  26. Since ancient times music and singing played a role in religious ceremonies. This explains why many churches were provided with balconies for the choirs (cantoria after  canto singing) and the organs. The Cantoria  (choir balcony) was intended to provide standing room for members of the choir, hence its nickname  "Singing Gallery”

  27. Since 1938 a pharmacy museum was realized in the Franciscan monastery

  28. Although it was demilitarised in the 1970s to protect it from war, in 1991, after the breakup of Yugoslavia, Dubrovnik was besieged by the Serb and Montenegrin soldiers gathered in the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) for seven months and suffered significant damage from shelling Since 1938 a pharmacy museum was realized in the Franciscan monastery

  29. Today the Friars Minor pharmacy is the third oldest functioning pharmacy in the entire world
