Ion Jalea (1887-1983)2

The Romanian sculptor Ion Jalea was born in 1887, graduated the Academy of Fine Arts from Bucharest and then followed courses in Paris where he was the disciple of Antoine Bourdelle. His lifeu2019s history became dramatic after he lost his left hand in World War I but he continued to create works of art for over 50 years.

  2. Ion Jalea (1887-1983) was a renowned Romanian sculptor, recipient of National Prize for Sculpture (1941) and State Prize (1957). In 1957 he became People's Artist. He was member of the Romanian Academy

  3. In 1908, after finishing the Arts and Craftsmanship School (Școala de Arte și Meserii), he entered the Belles-Arts Academy in Bucharest, where he studied with Professors sculptors Franz Storck and Dimitrie Paciurea. For accomplishing his studies, he went to Paris, at the Julian Academy, to become Bourdelle's apprentice. During World War One, Ion Jalea was part of the Romanian Army and fought in a series of battles. He was severely wounded and lost his left arm that had to be amputated next to the shoulder. After recuperating, despite being an amputee, he continued to dedicate his life to sculpture, as he did before. He became a well-known sculptor by working with his right arm only, and his greatest achievements were after he lost his arm

Arcul de Triumf is a triumphal arch located in the northern part of Bucharest, on the Kiseleff Road.The current triumphal arch, which was inaugurated in September 1936, has a height of 27 metres and was built after the plans of the architect Petre Antonescu. The sculptures with which the facades are decorated were created by famous Romanian sculptors such asConstantin Baraschi, Alexandru Călinescu, Ion Jalea, Dimitrie Paciurea and Costin Petrescu

  44. The Mausoleum of Mărășești is a memorial site in Romania containing remains of 5,073 Romanian soldiers and officers killed in the First World War and dedicated to the commemoration of the Battle of Mărășești and Romanian Army members who were killed during World War I 

  45. The Mărăşeşti Mausoleum was built to honor the heroes fallen during the Great Recompletion War. The memorial took architects George Cristinel and Constantin Pomponiu 15 years to build and was unveiled on 18 September 1938 by King Carol II. The frieze with bas-relief at the foot of the cupola is the work of sculptors Ion Jalea and Cornel Medrea
