Standard Setting Process • PPPO Secretariat attended: • 26th RPPO meeting in Guatemala in 2014 • CPM 10 – 2015 with contracting parties from Samoa, Cook Islands, New Zealand and Australia • PPPO actively participates in the IPPC regional IPPC workshop meeting (formerly ISPM review meeting). Held its regional IPPC meeting was from the 29-31 July 2015 • Also CDC Chair and IPPC Secretariat facilitated training on NROs • Funding from Australia under the Pacific Horticultural Agricultural Market Access Project • Project ends in June 2017

  7. Standard Setting Process • List of possible future regional standards the PPPO members would like to see developed: • Movement of sea containers - delay • Movement of sand and gravel – progress - Cook Islands with Kiribati • Ballast water - investigate • Air containers - delay

Standard Setting Process • Movement of handicrafts – work with IPPC • Import of used vehicles and machinery – work with APPPC • Movement of germplasm (plants) – use FAO manuals • Preclearance procedures (eg machinery) – progress – New Zealand with Niue and PNG • Waste disposal in vessels – progress with IPPC – Australia with Samoa

Information Exchange • IPP Portal – NPPO contact points addressed updated. • E-newsletter - newsletter is a means of sharing any information whether it be training workshops, regional meetings etc - to all NPPOs in the PICs • Other - Another area where information is shared to the NPPO in the region is through the PPPO mailing list. This list comprise of all NPPO contacts of the south west pacific region and is used as an information exchange platform in keeping abreast with regional topical biosecurity and plant protection issues.

Technical Assistance • PPPO assists NPPOs in the PICTs to participate in regional workshops and regional meeting such as PPPO Executive Committee meeting, Regional IPCC workshop meeting on draft ISPM, PPPO triennial regional meeting, and training organized by IPPC, Australia or New Zealand, USA • Annual Plant pest surveillance and authenticated IDs • Workplan of SPC-BATs is based around the PPPO activities

Technical Assistance • Helpdesk : The SPC-LRD established a biosecurity helpdesk as part of its technical advisory services to better serve its clients (PPPO Members). • The helpdesk predominantly receives and processes email equerries on matters related to biosecurity, trade facilitation and plant protection including advice on import risk analysis

TC-8th PPPO/16th RTMPP • Held in Nadi, Fiji from the 21st to 25th September 2015 • Around 71 participants (PPPO members, FAO, DFAT, Observers) • New PPPO Chair – Vanuatu, Vice Chair – Australia • Executive PPPO Committees:- Melanesia – Fiji and New Caledonia, Micronesia – Nauru and Republic of the Marshall Islands, Polynesia – Niue and Tonga

Capacity Building • PPPO Secretariat through the Biosecurity and Trade support of SPC facilitated biosecurity training in the North Pacific ( Guam, Palau, FSM, RMI, Saipan) • Regional Global awareness training – Palau, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands • Pest List Database training – Solomon and Vanuatu and Cook Islands.

  17. Capacity Building • Plant health Systems Analysis Course – two weeks course (8th – 19 June 2015)in North Carolina, US • 7 PPPO member countries were accepted by US-APHIS and International Service for the two weeks long course.

  18. Legislation Review • FAO Consultant assisting the PPPO members countries. • 3 options for countries to take back • (1) separate but coordinated & mutually reinforcing legislations for PH and AH; (2) amend Model Law; (3) amend Model Law and include food safety

Pest Surveillance Activities • Crop pest surveillance done for Palau, Vanuatu Tuvalu and Yap. • Arthropod samples have been sent to the NZ laboratory for id authentication. • Some results have been received and country Pest List Database has been updated. • Eradication of Oriental Fruit Fly – Cook Island

  21. Invasive Alien Species • Delimiting surveys on Yellow Crazy Ants outbreak in Tokelau, Tuvalu and Nauru

  22. Market Access Activities • Worked with NPPO Tuvalu in developing a Market Access submission to NZ for export of breadfruit chips • Feasibility study of Papaya Export to NZ from the Cook Island • Assisting a private company with Herbs export to New Zealand market

  23. Market Access Activities • Cook Island Noni Marketing – Organic Certified Noni Juice to China and Japan • Export Figures April – 5,000L – Japan, 3,000L - China May – 21,000L - Japan June – 9,000L - China and 12,000L – Japan July -11,000L Japan September – 14,000L - Japan
