  1. A Guide to Loading Data from SQL Server to Snowflake The process of loading data to Snowflake from Microsoft SQL Server is not complicated. With the right tools, it can be done easily in a few definite steps and clicks. But first, it is necessary to know what these two platforms are all about and the benefits of loading data to Snowflake. 

  2. Microsoft SQL Server Microsoft SQL Server, a relational database management system (RDMS) integrates into the Microsoft ecosystem and supports the Microsoft .NET framework. Applications can be run on a single machine either a local area network or the web.

  3. Snowflake Snowflake is a cloud-based database warehousing solution that irons out many issues related to traditional database management platforms. Organizations are today opting to load data from SQL Server to Snowflakebecause of several benefits.  Snowflake supports JSON, Avro, XML, and Parquet data and both structured and unstructured data can be loaded to it.  It has separate compute and storage facilities.   4. Steps to load data from SQL Server to Snowflake The first step is to mine data from Microsoft SQL Server and is done through queries for extraction. Select Statements are used to sort, filter, and retrieve the data to be mined. Bulk data or entire databases are mined with the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.  The extracted data has to be prepared and processed before it can be loaded to Snowflake. It has to be ensured that the mined data structure matches those supported by Snowflake. For JSON or XML data, no schema has to be specified beforehand.  Before the prepared and processed data can be loaded to Snowflake, the data files have to be uploaded to a temporary staging area. It can be an internal one created exclusively with respective SQL statements or an external area like Amazon S3 or Microsoft Azure. 

  5. The final stage is to load data from SQL Server to Snowflake. For small databases, the Data Loading Overview guides users through the process. For large databases, the PUT command is used to stage files and the COPY INTO table command for loading processed data into the target table. If the data is lodged in an external stage, it has to be copied from a local drive or Amazon S3.  These steps might look complicated on paper but with the right tools and skill sets, loading data to Snowflake is not a problem.
